Dear fellow EFL'ers and friends

I've been fortunate to have a 'job' thrust my way in the last week about
Distance Education in China - a 55 plus page business report to go to the
Ed. Dept guys in Beijing as a joint submission with Phillips* that needed polishing and proof reading.

What will happen here in China over the next decade as regards equality of opportunity for all irrespective of location and economic means has to be seen to be believed. Logistically, everything is in place now. The big gaps that need to be filled involve skilled persons in the e-commerce field, aswell as trained, qualified, and competent "E" english teachers.

Does that fit into your field of experience?
Do you know friends who may fit these positions?

This wont come 'online' until next year but be prepared for another
explosion of jobs in the EFL field in China in the future.

WoZ,
I've got some experience on both sides.

Interested to see what you brew up....I've gotten pretty skeptical of distance education, especially when it comes to languages.

Computer-based stuff (without backing from a live teacher in the room with you) so far seems pretty limited in its ability to interact with students on a sponaneous basis...hard for it to have a decent conversation with you, correct your pronunciation, or improvise. It's OK for vocabulary and phrases etc. but pretty weak for the dynamics of language.

So, of course, the China market will be wide open to it. Twisted Evil
Or maybe there's a better way???

I feel I will personally have to do long distance myself, for my MA.

I have to join with MTN (Congrats BTW). It would be a disaster with the already poor dynamics of Chinese speaking, I mean actually opening their mouths and practicing English.

Of course, I guess they could have classes of 600 instead of 60. And more power would be in the hands of fewer people.

My current school is borrowing money to build 20 CALL-type labs. What a joke, a waste of money. You can't buy language (yet). Most Chinese (and foreign) teachers can't use them for anything other then showing movies. But a Japanese company is going to loan them the money (nice of them). God forbid the school should take a fraction of that money and invest in smaller classes or better pay for teachers
