Hi everyone:
I'm pleased to be joining this discussion forum, and I have found a lot of valuable information here.
I am seriously considering going to Japan to teach within the next year, and I am wondering what what kind of attitudes I may encounter as a gay man. My gut instinct is that my being a "white" American may be a greater issue than my being gay. Can anyone else share experiences with me?
I currently live in Los Angeles, where the school district, the teacher's union, and various teacher/student groups work toward a greater understanding of gay and lesbian issues, and toward respectuful treatment within the school environement. I know, however, that this is not true everywhere.
I take great pride in being who and what I am, and I have worked hard toward becoming a teacher who can pass on values of self-respect and to empower my future students. Any input on what I may respect would be helpful.
