I've got a job with AEON in Kitakyushu, starting in June. Would like to hear from anyone who's working in the Kitakyushu, Fukuoka area, to get the lowdown on what's like in that part of Japan. I've been to Japan before, but didn't get down to Kyushu and stayed on the tourist trail for the most part, so not quite sure what to expect! Confused

G'day,

I'm a teacher in Korea now. I've been here a year, but I'm heading to Kitakyushu in a month to find work and live there. My girlfriend lives there. She's Japanese.

I've spent only a very little time in Kitakyushu, in my 2 little trips to Japan so far.

I feel it might be a fairly liveable city. It's not a densely populated Asian metropolis at all. It's fairly spacious compared to many Japanese cities. 1 million people, and part of a bigger metropolitan area that goes down to Fukuoka city etc.

There are some nice parts. Kokura is the good downtown area with a few things to do. And it is a coastal city. And very tropical weather in summer. It's been tagged as a boring, industrial city....but it's definately cleaned up its image a lot.

Ultimately, it ain't a very cosmopolitan or exciting city...whereas Fukuoka might be, which is just an hour away.

I would say you're going to a more laid back and friendly part of Japan however, which is nice.

Check out: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kitakyushu

That's also got some good links to other websites which can tell you more. There are a couple of websites out there that give you info on dining and nightlife too. Actually, that's a great online encyclopedia (Wikipedia) on the whole.

Also, do a search on this forum with the word 'Kitakyushu', and you can find a few people who live there maybe. I did that once. There are a few I think.

Anyhow, good luck, you lucky bugger! you got a job there! That's what I gotta do..

Mumma mia!

See ya...

Thanks Jezza - the more info I can get the better. My school and apartment are located in Kokura which from the sounds of it is one of the more interesting parts of the city.
Good luck in your job search.
