I just got rejected at ecc. would it be prudent to reapply for an interview next month, or just a waste of time?

I'd wait until either Christmas Season or Summer Vacation in August. I think they really need people then because some teachers take off and don't return.

would it be prudent to go to another recruiting place. I think the guy has it in for me there. Also, I think I had too much of a resume. Would it be possible to apply as a first applier and leave some work history out, or is there database going to red flag it?

When where how did you apply. Not all application places and proceedures are the same for ECC as some independent recruiters are used through Australia and Canada and get compensated for their efforts.

Also in Japan choices and reasons for hiring can vary from region to region.

Still too vague. But I'll try to explain as best I can.

There are two types of recruiting done by ECC.

Recruiters: Individuals who either were ex ecc folks or never even worked for ECC who recruit for ECC. They are given basic guidelines for recruitment and they handle the interviews tests etc. They only punt on the detials of those they think should be hired and ECC processes them so they can come on over.

ECC Human Resources folks: on occasion, they make trips over to Australia, North America, etc to recruit people. However, there are a few regions of HR folks (Kanto, Kansai, Chubu, etc). Not all of them go and not all from the same region.

THUS if you know who interviewed you, whether or not they were HR or a Recruiter, and the reason why you were rejected, it would help.


Look, apply again. Worst they say is no. Beyond that I don't know what you want folks to say.

I just applied in toronto. IT was in a guilding so i guess that he was a recruiter. he said that one needs to wait a year to apply again. Just want to know whats up. If it is worth while to go to los angeles, the only other place here.

I might just apply to other schools. If it's easy for you to go to LA, then go ahead. But you might be better off applying to the other schools that hire from abroad. They all have pluses and minuses and it's hard to know in advance which school you'll like. Despite NOVA's horrible reputation, some people do enjoy their time there.

If I were you, I'd apply to all the schools that hire from abroad and hold interviews in cities that are convenient for you to travel to. If you do that, you're bound to get at least one acceptance.

Do you know if the same recruiter attends the LA ones? If so it's pointless.

If you were able to come to Japan and apply via each regional office(course it would require you travel to each) then you would increase your chances.

You could wait a year and I wonder if the guy would even remember you from the previous time.

Like another has said, you can as well just get on with anyone and come over if you're desperate to get here. From there you could switch to ECC eventually if this is your end goal.

Be careful. ECC does not hire anyone in Japan who has not completed at least a one year contract. If this guy gets hired with NOVA and bails after 6 months, ECC will NOT hire him.

Strange, two guys I know in chubu got on with ECC with less than a year under their belt. I also know they've hired a few folks with zilch experience as well from within Japan. That might be a regional office specific thing.

Contact the people who sent the rejection letter to you and ask them if it was a matter of qualifications, compatibility, or timing. If they indicate that you displayed the requirements for the job but were beaten in that round by more qualified candidates, ask them if they would suggest that you attend the next round of interviews.

their recruitment section suck big time. After the interview, I got accepted onto the waiting list. they didn't contact me at all after that. I eventually contacted them only to find out all the positions had been filled.

Despite this, they kept advertising the same positions, and continue to do so!

Also, the recruitment seems arbitary, I've known perfectly good teachers to be rejected.

There's a sight sense in which the Japan Forum is obsolete in terms of it being a moaning forum.

The Japanese ESL job market is very ridiculous - this doesn't need to be stated and re-stated. Comparing experiences of Nova, ECC and the others is pointless because as so many of you noticed, the language businesses give everybody entirely different stories. This was sort of similar in Saudi and this was done to stop people uniting against any unfair treatment, in a sense a movement against unionisation.

When I was on the orientation lecture at the swanky hotel in Tokyo for the JET scheme the guy giving it simply said that when things get wierd just remind yourself why you came to Japan and focus on those issues.

If any of you came here to actually work then you won't be around long that IS for sure because the gaijin job market is whack to the power of a million.

How about a few of you moaners starting to propose solutions to these problems of unsatisfactory management and educational provision?
