Actually, I'd be interested to know what you think of each paper, whynotme, especially about who owns them and what particular agenda they're pushing. I also wonder which columnists you like or think are worth bothering with?

I don't really look at which paper I'm reading-- I just skim through whatever interests me in the papers my husband brings home, but he brings home all different ones. My reading is still pretty limited-- I struggle with politics, law, and economics (actually, I can't get through economics well in English, either), but the sort of 'women's sections', or other non-news sections I can manage without a dictionary. I don't know which paper has the Istanbul34/police blotter section, but that so far is my favorite read-- things like industrial accidents or 'A 26 year old girl has run away from home-- her parents are looking for her everywhere' Shocked

As far as I understand, all the newspapers are owned by the same few people-- is this true? I know that Zaman is the religious paper (also, it's the hardest for me to read and has the fewest pictures), but beyond that, they all seem the same, with the obligatory scantily clad woman on the front and back pages. I imagine the reading level can't be all that high (I'm guessing 8th grade or so) if I'm able to read them at all...

i read Milliyet , cant tell you why maybe because i have always read Milliyet....but i agree with you all the newspapers started to look the same especially with the half naked woman on the back page .
the owner of Milliyet Hurriyet Posta and Radikal is the same person(kanalD),Sabah Takvim are a different group(atv) ( Vatan was included in the group)...Aksam is owned by a different group(Show tv+ Turkcell+ dıgıturk)),zaman is a religious newspaper (stv)but worth reading at least no crap news or article...
In the past Milliyet was known as teachers and strudents newspaper..Hurriyet was trademen's newspaper and the newspaper you read showed your character but now all the papers are the same

So if Cumhuriyet has changed, are there any good leftist papers? (Actually, I'm not even sure what all 'Leftist' implies here...) Does Radikal in any way live up to its name?

Can you rate papers in terms of their reliabilty or 'hard' news? Is any one better than another for international news?

justme,
forget leftist papers ...all of them have changed and became "liboş"...it is hard to explain the term "liboş" to you.....well it means "laissez faire" phylosophy i mean "let them do whatever they want ,just gimme the money"way of thinking so it is hard to trust a paper in Turkey...they

Liboş... What a cool word! I think you explained it well enough, thanks!

Zaman is certainly the most serious-looking paper (fewest pictures, most text...), but is it actually any good for reading? Or any different from other papers? Since it's the religious paper, I'm not sure my husband would allow it in the house on principle alone. I got the impression, though, that it's like the Christian Science Monitor? More or less hard, straight news, good commentaries, and not particularly religious aside from advertising and reputation. But that's just my impression-- I don't really know.

And again, whynotme, I ask if there are any columnists you recommend? I decided trying to understand them will be my next step in Turkish reading, so I'd like to start with ones that aren't tripe...

why not start with Serdar Turgut (aksam) or Hasan Pulur ( milliyet) i also love reading Abbas Gcl( milliyet) because he writes about education...

avoid Mehmet Barlas,Emin laşan Very Happy Very Happy Very Happy ( this is my personal idea)

and if you are reading Cumhuriyet or Radikal, it is a good idea to buy a a paper supporting the other side like Zaman.
