This topic has been discussed recently. Arriving from Korea, I do see an advantage in HCMC in being more of a "free agent," working part-time at 2 or 3 different schools. But we have tor realize that we native speakers are becoming more and more "dime-a-dozen."

If you want split shifts, and being regulated to part-time speaking and listening teacher, this is what you will be.

More schools now are asking the teacher to pay the tax. Another school just starting paying $10 per hour.

Within 3 years, Vietnam won't be the place to teach.

I don't want to sound negative, but this trend is strong.

Please add you comments. I know there are some that disagree with me about where the Vietnamese EFL is headed, and HCMC in particuluar.

Why shouldn't we pay tax? In every country I've ever worked in I've had to pay my own tax, it's the way of the world. Tax here is ridiculously low at 10%, so given the poverty surrounding me I don't object to paying it and would be more than willing to pay more. If I worked back in the UK I'd be paying 25%, even more if I was back in France again. Who ever told you VN was some sort of offshore tax haven?

As for the $10 an hour, anyone who accepts that sort of pay deserves what they get, and the school will soon wise up when they see what sort of teachers they're getting.

I agree with your logic Mr. Wind Up, but with dual pricing, and 3, 4, and 5X pricing - we are already paying - tax.

This is our tax.

I am only an English teacher (wage-wise) but I pump my income back into the ecnonomy. This is a cash gig.

The schools should continue to cover it, IMO.

Dual pricing? The only places which officially practise dual pricing are hotels, Vietnam Airlines and Apocalypse Now (the latter being in our favour!). If you think some shop, market trader or restaurant is ripping you off, don't go there! Or get a Vietnamese friend/girlfriend/wife to go in there & buy stuff for you, which is what I usually do.

Again, I don't object to paying a couple of thousand dong more than the locals do as I earn a lot more money than most of them. Socialism in action mate!

Dual pricing occurs in most many other realms, constantly. There is no use going into the details.
