Hi all,

So I've heard about this internet censure issue in China.

Does the censure issue handicapp dowloading from independent FTP site...or File sharing capabilities?

I'm planning to teach at a university in China, I've been teaching at universities for the past 6 years and I have some past graduate students that often send me their research projects to proof read or at times we collaborate on different projects etc.. The point being, I often have to download heavy files from independent FTP sites, often times the material is in Video format. Will this be a problem in China? Of course the material in question is srictly academic...no porn..or suggestive images...or anything like that.....

Also, are the connections they offer at universites, or that one will be able to have in ones apartment, DSL or better?

I suggest you do a search of both China forums on Dave's as this topic, while not a FAQ, certainly has been discussed with some frequency.

Porn is much easier to access online than the BBC. In your case, it will probably be a simple matter of connection speed/quality rather than any filtering and, for that, you should query your university. If I were a cadre in the Ministry of Information Industry, though, the term
"independent FTP site" would certainly raise a few flags no matter what its raison d'etre.

The university im working at doesnt allow me to access any FTP site outside of China. Now this may be different at different University and how the firewall is setup.

The school I worked at before, i could connect to my ftp in canada with no problems but the speed was slow. When i came to the university, i cannot even come close to making an connection to the proxy server to be able to access FTP sites outside of china.

FTP sites in china seem to be fine, so far

This will differ from university to university and from region to region. This statement isnt a generalization but just a specific case.

A student gave a newspaper article report to the class the other day and it seems like the government is going into overdrive with brainwashing vis-a-vis emails and short mobile phone messages. The article apparently suggested that continued use of email and SMS for communication can lower intelligence by 30%! Student confirmed percentage when questioned about it and agreed that it was probably true! Seems like we're headed for 'self-control'!

So, in posting this reply you were disobeying your employer?
Or did you post from an independent Internet cafe???
