A lot of Japanese also live with elderly parents, get financial and economic assistance from relatives send their kids to public Japanese schools and dont have to spend money on flying the family back home for visits every year.
Most foreigners also dont get twice yearly bonuses like Japanese do. |

PaulH makes some very good points. One eikaiwa where I worked had an assistant general manager who claimed to be living on 180,000 yen a month. Still, he had a fine, late model car with a great sound system, and purchased a house that had a 90,000 yen/month payment.
Besides 2 large annual bonuses, his parents were paying a lot of his bills so they would be able to move in with him in their old age. |

from what i've seen in the cities it must be impossible but i support a family, one baby, kinda comfortably in hakodate. i'm teaching privately out of my apt. up here an eikaiwa job and a few privates would put you on easy street. granted, the mother is philippina and much more frugal than j-wives are reputed to be. now family obligations and the like for us. |
