I'm going to begin teaching at a school in Yokosuka next month, and have a few "ignorant about geography" questions that I hope it's OK to bother other more knowledgeable members with... The city's website is pretty not informative. First, is Yokosuka basically an extension of the Tokyo metropolitan area? I'm used to big sprawling American cities like LA, in which one municipality runs into another but people refer to the general areas as "LA." Or is Yokosuka a discrete city unto itself (I know it has discrete governmental borders...but you know what I mean?) Anyway, the other question is is the area dominated by the Naval base and pretty Americanized (which I wouldn't be too keen on but don't have much choice about now...)? Sorry, I know this type of question doesn't contribute much in terms of "interestingness" on the forum, but I appreciate any info/insults etc.
Thanks,
Louis |

sorry for sp or grammar errors but i am very sleepy. yokosuka is a great area. there are a lot of nice shops, good weather from the ocean, and great parks. however here is a navy base which can be seen as good and bad. the base is great for socializing...yes there are some nice guys and girls there...and getting things from home like taco bell and large sized shoes. but when the boats are in beware, usually a lot of annoying guys from all over invade the city. the japanese dont seem to mind though. i think they accept it as a way of life and also as temporary, just until the boats leave. also a lot of japanese people speak english so you can usually get help especailly around yokosuka chuo station. just let them know you arent military and they are usually nice, plus past keikyu kurihama station there really arent any military folks running around....hum...sometimes it rains like hell and is annoying. but it is actually really nice weather now. about 40 mins from tokyo and 25 mins from yokohama....hum.....i'd say yokosuka people are very proud of their city...im me for more info if u want. |
