Hi there
I was looking for some advice, my partner and I are thinking of heading out to Japan in Sept time.
My partner has a BA (Major Eng/Law), Dip Ed and has been teaching at a secondary school in Australia for the past year and a half. I on the other hand do not have a degree but have completed a TESOL cert and have been tutoring English through a volunteering program to obtain experience. (I essentially would like to work with young children but would take what I can).
Does anyone have any suggestions on how best we should market ourselves. I'm pretty sure that I can only go over on a working holiday visa, should we try to get the best job for my partner first and then I would look for something when we get there, or should we market ourselves together at schools as a 'two for one' sort of thing? Or can we try to get us both through together with one of the big 4 (JET,NOVA etc) if possible?
Also does anyone know how accomm would go for 2 ppl? Alot of the programs I guess would only set people up for 1 in a room?
Any information would be greatful. |

A little clarification here: is your partner your husband or your boyfriend? If he is your husband you can get a dependent visa which though a non-working visa you can get permission to work.
If you are not married you only havea working holiday visa to fall back on. The term partner is not enough to give a detailed response as it involves visa issues and eligibility.
The big schools only recruit at certain times of the year in Australia and its possible you could be made to wait up to six months for an opening before they grant his visa. Only then could he go to Japan.
Realistically, with no previous ESL teaching experience in Japan and I assume he has never taught ESL in Australia before, he will not walk straight into a high school job here, and will need to look for a position at one of the big chain schools. Teaching at a high school as a secondary school teacher is not the same as teaching English as ESL in a foreign country and he will have to learn the ropes, as well as find his way around, find accomodation etc.
JET is not one of the big 4. JET is a government run exchange program that puts foreign nationals to work team teaching with Japanese English teachers in a high school. On JET you are not a teacher in your own right as you are not qualified to teach a class by yourself in a Japanese high school, even with a Dip Ed. You are an ALT or Assistant Language Teacher. the big 4 are the commercial chain language schools: NOVA, AEON, GEOS and ECC.
The next application for JET is in November, interviews in February or March and you would come out to Japan next August (2006) if he gets accepted.
If you are from Australia you can get the working holiday visa and Australians (lucky them) get two extensions of a 6 month visa, which means a stay of up to 18 months in Japan on the WHV. Every one else (Kiwis, Brits) get a maximum of one year.
If you have no tertiary education you can not get a job part time at NOVA as they ask for one year of university (or equivalent tertiary education) for part time Flex Timers on the WHV. Maybe you can try the other schools for leads. Kids classes are a possibility on the WHV though Im not sure where you would apply if you are overseas. Most people come here first and then look for work once they get here.
If you get company accomodation they will put up an employee but not families or non-working spouses. As you are not contributing to company coffers by your labor they will see you as dead weight that can be filled by another employee. You would probably have to rent your own apartment or stay in a gaijin hostel which is your best bet. No key money, reasonable weekly and monthly rates and they have single and double rooms. No need for a guarantor either or your employer breathing down your neck.
Recently I have seen or heard of couples get jobs while they are still overseas and some schools do advertise for a couple, they see them as more stable and not likely to disappear in a hurry. I would check the job forums on
http://www.jobsinjapan.com and http://www.ohayosensei.com for leads.
let me know if you need more info. |
