Don't get depressed about being broke in Indonesia. http://tefltrade.blog-city.com/ cites salary figures for terrible ELT jobs in Britain. The hourly rates for seven schools in London range from 7.58 (Rp 138,000) to 11 (Rp 201,000), with an average of 8.90 (Rp 163,000). 8 (Rp 146,000) is common. This is presumably before tax. Then you've got London pub prices...
An irate manager from one of the offending schools responded:

I cant exactly say I was quaking in my boots to find I was mentioned on your pathetic moaning website for losers and readers of the Guardian that we are offering one of the cr*ppest jobs in tefl. Perhaps you would care to visit one of our schools and meet some of the 64-strong teaching team, all of whom readily accepted the STARTING salary of 9.50/hr, and have a strong commitment to their students and each other, in turn providing one of the best training grounds for newer teachers, as well as excellent promotional prospects for gifted and experienced teachers. |
It's Malvern House, if anyone's looking for a job in London. Meanwhile, shall we send some food parcels? |

I sometimes go back to the UK to do the odd work stint - I get a damn sght more than that and wouldn't accept less. Schools will get away with paying crappy wages for as long as teachers are prepared to work for them. In my book, crappy wages = crappy school. |

Wow!! So to be a reader of the Guardian is a bad thing is it?
As an overseas reader and recent expat teacher, I take it that this is an example of the British class prejudice one reads about. One is judged by what paper one reads.
Well, it seems a pretty good paper to me, so we fellow readers and whingers of this paper and this web site can relax.
We're not working in London for slave wages and freezing our bollocks off either. |
