A friend of mine is considering either Japan or China and is not sure which to teach in.

Tell him to flip a coin. Obviously people on a Japan forum will choose Japan and people in a China forum choose China.

You want us to make up his mind for him?

A couple of questions about your poll questions:

1. What "things" are you talking about? Standard of living? salaries? jobs?
2. We teach a foreign language. English here is EFL.
3. Are things better than what? Than in China? Than in the UK?

A problem might be that very few people have lived and worked in both Japan and China. You might be better off asking specific questions about Japan here and about China in the China forum. Or better yet, tell your friend to spend a few days reading through all the old posts. That might give them a good idea of how things stand.

I have taught business English in both Shanghai and Tokyo. PM me if you have any specific questions...

Matador, your experience in China and Japan have been in large cities (Shanghai and Tokyo) therefore when making a recommendation to someone, make sure they understand that you don't "represent" other areas outside those cities. Shanghai is very different from the rest of China and therefore does not constitute IMHO a fair reflection of what "true" China is like.
Anyway, all the best.

China is a rough place, regardless. I've been to both places, but haven't taught in any.

The living conditions in China are much rougher than Japan (so are the people).

My opinion.
