Hi folks,
Firstly thanks to all who have answered previous threads of mine.
What I'd like to know is more about the career progresion of English teachers in Jakarta (especially).
Do you just re-sign a standard contract every year with no raises for the most part?
Do you need to move jobs to get more money/better conditions?
How does one become a DoS? After how long (on average)? What sort of income can you expect as a DoS?
Is that the next step up from teaching? Anyone with a very rough timeline, perhaps from personnal experience?
I ask this because I plan to make Jakarta my permanent home and wish to buy my favourite Kos (perhaps I can turn it into a teacher house), but on 7mRp/month, that is not likely. My Kos is in Kampung Ambon, Rawamangun - Jakarta Timur. I only know of EEC in Kelapa Gading that is close by to that. Anyone know of other schools?
Thanks again for everything - this website (and its regular crew) is a fountain of knowledge and I even used the referrence in my TESOL presentation last Tuesday.

At my old school, teachers who signed up for a second year were offered an increase of 10% in monthly salary, and were required to teach only 20 hours per week (instead of 24). No other additional perks were offered. |

Anyone else have any experience in this field?
I'm sure many of you have worked in a school for more than one contract.
Any DoS able to comment on how they handle it? |

sorry this is a bit late.
EF usually give 20% or thereabouts for a second year with them. No doubt they have much less to pay out in the way of immigration dept 'on-costs'.
I was given a better house plus the 20%, so it's worth asking for. |

I think most schools pay a salary increment for every year that you've worked for them. They usually want teachers to stay for various reasons, not least the saving in immigration costs.
The larger schools may have senior teachers and/or an ADOS. You might be able to become a senior teacher after a year, a DOS after two or three, assuming the old DOS moves on. Unfortunately, some of them have to be carried out feet first.
In the less popular cities you stand a very good chance of becoming a DOS in your second year. This happened to people I knew in Cirebon and Malang.
I would hazard a DOS gets paid 50% - 100% more than a new teacher.
Actually, few teachers seem interested in becoming DOSes, despite the extra money and perks. |

At my school, a new teacher was paid 7.25 juta. After the DOS was canned (deservedly), I 'acted' as DOS for several months while a new DOS was hired. I was offered the DOS position at a salary of 12 million RP, but I declined. The stress and hassles weren't worth the extra pay.

I knew someone who was DOS at EF Cirebon. She got paid less than I did for working as a first-year teacher at EF Bandung, if my memory serves me correctly. |

I guess a DOS gets paid 50% - 100% more than a new teacher in the same school. That doesn't mean you can't find a better-paid job as a mere grunt elsewhere. |
