She was never an eigo bandit, and I've experienced enough of them to know. Without speaking badly of my wife here, her reasoning has more to do with an unrealistic perspective of certain things. I agree there are red flags (I've been working on them for years), but it isn't about language mooching.
PaulH, I'm not looking for Japanese just for career advancement, although it would improve my prospects. I mainly want fluent, literate, and even eloquent Japanese because I simply refuse to live with a communication impediment. How you express yourself is of course a major determinant of the respect you get, and you can't live to the fullest if you can't completely engage your environment. I understand that certain Japanese in certain circumstances have problems with fluent foreigners, but I won't let my standards be dictated by that nonsense. If I'm going to make my life in Japan, I'm going to do it all the way.
I appreciate everybody's concern, but there's more to my marriage than the difficulties I've mentioned here. She's still my wife and the mother of my son, and I don't want too much dissection of her and our relationship happening on a public forum. If someone wants to compare notes, I'd be happy to do so through PMs.

Vince,
Ask yourself some questions. DO you want to live in Japan forever because this is what your wife seems to want. By the way I also have a 6 month son, in order to get him a passport as you said both of you have to be there, I wouldn't give her consent until you are sure about your future plans. I would first try to alleviate your wife's homesickness. Get the web cam, have her watch JApanese programs, buy cable, have her call her folks often. Good luck |
