Pretty common, dear MartinK! No health insurance - I have seldom enjoyed such a benefit. Salary? Low but good enough. Is it perchance Tanghu Middle School? Not bad! |

Firstly Chengdu is a fine city! well worth the time to have a look at!
Shuangliu is out by the airport ie in the middle of nowhere. . . not a million miles from the city centre but far enough to be a pain in the rear if you have to do it on a regular basis. . .
I would also be a bit reserved about middle schools in general and especially in that area. . .there is an infamous middle school belonging to a French Airplane JV that caused several of my colleagues to nearly go postal. I don't know the full name and as you point out it may well have changed.
There are much better deals to be had in town if you have the time to look around. . . . I can;t really give you any leads as I left the area a while ago and I don't want to get you running round after things that might well have changed/gone etc
If you want PM me and i'll see if I can put you in touch with someone still in the area
Good luck |

Excuse my ignorance, but why do you guys work for such a pathetic salary? Obviously I am not in China, and looking at the salaries I see posted I guess I never will be in China in a professional sense. |

I worked at Tanghu Middle School last summer at a summer camp they held there. This school is located in Shuangliu, a suburb of Chengdu, and this is of course the home of Shuangliu Middle School as well. They are both very good schools as far as I know.
Shuangliu is very close to Chengdu. A taxi there will run you about 40 RMB and take 10-15 minutes. A bus will run you about 2 RMB and takes 30 minutes to 1 hour. (depending on how many times the bus driver decides he needs to stop and pick up more passengers) |

btw,
At Tanghu Middle School, I made 5000 RMB for a 4 week camp -- I pretty much lived with the students, so I am not sure how many hours I worked.
The director there, Stanley Chen (Chen Si Chun) tried to scam me out of 1000RMB -- when the camp was over he only paid me 4000 RMB. All it took was a dirty look to get the rest...
Roger -- have you worked at Tanghu?? |

No, I haven't worked at Tanghu Middle School. Glad to learn from you about potential downsides. I had some correspondence with Steve on account of another person interested at that time in coming to China.
But so many first impressions are false! |
