I have heard that the Japanese are "sensitive" about the colours...
OK from what I understand:
black = death
red = money (?)
...so does that mean that is it offensive to the japanese if I, say, wear a black t-shirt and jacket?
What about red shirts / t-shirts...
Or are the foreigners "excused" of our ignorance ???
I ask this as a big part of my wardrobe are black items....
Hmmmmmm.

Plenty of people wear black attire here. Try google images with Japan or japanese people etc and look at busy group areas with lots of people mulling around for a cross section etc.
Whether you'll be considered strange for your attire I can't tell you as I don't know how you dress overall. Just come and see for yourself and determine whether or not it is appropriate for you. |

I dress pretty conservatively, mainly brand names and mainly black. Hence the initial concern for the choice of the colour of "death" !
If you see people wearing black then I suppose I have nothing to worry about, thanks.

I think color taboos are more associated with giving gifts. Check out a book on Japanese etiquette or something like _Culture Shock: Japan_ for details.
You can see snapshots of Japanese street fashion here:

Obviously, most of these people are far too casually dressed to teach, but in the more conservative/expensive areas (such as Ginza) you might get some ideas of what people might wear. |

Any colour of clothing is fine.
You should avoid wearing a competely black neck-tie, as these are normally reserved for funerals. Likewise, a white tie is for weddings. |
