Hi,
I am thinking about studying Japanese at a language school full time in January '06, after working for a year - does anybody have experience of a good language academy which is value for money etc etc?

At the moment I am considering all locations.

I know this isn't really relevent to this site, but hopefully someone can help - many thanks

Dan

I hesitate to recommend these guys for a couple of reasons, but as no school is going to be perfect, I will throw it out... Yamasa Institute... http://www.yamasa.org/index.html

The location, Okazaki, Aichi-ken is quite nice.... It's only 25min by train from Nagoya. The teachers at the school seem to be fairly well qualified and professional... But there is a lot of bureaucracy, red tape and politics (that's the down-side).

I was gonna suggest the same place if and only if you live near it or are willing to go through there dorm program.

ECC has Japanese courses but usually pretty expensive. Also IC Nagoya has Japanese courses and is decent price wise. A perk of IC Nagoya is that you can also take a part time(as little as one night/One class a week) and get a big discount off your Japanese classes. Yamasa has something similar but I don't know the details.

How much can you expect to pay? I've trolled around looking at places and they all seem quite expensive. Is it a truism that J schools are going to be expensive?

In Osaka, the going rate to have a licenced Japanese teacher come to your home is 3000 yen for 2 hours, plus their transportation. This is a reasonable alternative for people who work and don't want to put down a lot of money.
