Does anybody know why after passing the interview Yeditepe asks some applicants to come in for 2 hours of observations before signing a contract while other are asked to observe 3, 4, or more, followed by giving a sample lesson? It struck me as a bit odd when I heard this from a colleague who had applied there. Isn't an interview enough, esp at this level? |

That face you have on your post means your joking right Entrailicus.
As to hobo's question, they have no idea why they do it. BTW not everyone has to go through that, if they know you or if one of the staff will back you, then you get the job without question. |

Do you think that 'passing' an interview means you should automatically get a job? As a teacher do you think it is only fair that you should be offered a job based on your 'performance' in an observed lesson? I don't think it is out of order. Many teachers can bs an interview but at the end of the day can't teach.
OK, i now have my flame proof clothes on. Attack. |

some years ago I had a job interview over the phone and then had to send a video of me teaching, since in the live interview I would have had to give a sample lesson. I preferred filming my real teaching, though one of the students very slyly grinned and then flipped off at the camera (I had a student doing the filming, obviously). it was interesting to see how I looked through their eyes. I got the job, btw. For another job interview I had to do a fake lesson before the committee, and that was very awkward. These were both in the States, where committees rule, which may be the case at Yeditepe. However, I agree, if you know someone, you are more likely to get hired without jumping through so many hoops. |

dmb, no flame interpreted or intended. I just couldn't figure out why people of very similar experience and training were given such different responses after the interview. And no, nobody knew anyone at the school before so there was no favouriyism involved. I would have thought that everyone would have to give a demo lesson but that wasn't the case. |

Yeditepe uni. a a member of ISTEK foundation schools so if the teacher worked for one of the Istek schools and has a good reputation +a reference letter from the DOS and a telephone call from the principal, i dont think there is a need for a demo class... |

It could just be the case of a manager trying to justify their job and picking someone at random. |

... that is, if you have any integrity and self-respect.
The most common description of it in Istanbul is "diploma factory".
When I went to the orientation for new Prep teachers last fall, I quickly realized that it is little more than a kindergarten extension for brats whose rich parents did not love them into any sense of responsibliity.
Sad to say that every teacher I have met who has ever worked there has had a nightmarish experience or two, including not being (fully) paid.
The director of "both" Preps (north and south) is a veritable virago, by common consent.
After meeting her, I said "Sayonara".
You have been warned. |

So it is official Yeditepe is crap. But Bedrettin is so obsessed with education. And Yeditepe graduates have been known to do postgrad work at Bilkent. |

Entrailicus I must assume from your constant attacks on Bilkent that you were once interviewed by them for a job and were turned down.
I hope that you are not questioning the integrity of the Royal Military Academy at Sandhurst now HRH Prince Harry is attending it. |

Same goes for most tefl jobs. Do you never say anything about Dogus because you are afraid of it getting back to management or is it something else? |
