Hi,
My partner and I have been looking for teaching positions in Russia, particularly in Moscow or Saint- Petersburg. I have a TESOL certificate and almost completed a year of teaching english in Guanzhou, China (where we presently are) with my boyfriend. He has a Ba but no TESOL certificate. I've tried BKC-IH, but they replied with an email that tried to sell us something.
Is it possible to find something even though I don't have a Ba? I really love Russia, i've been there before, I know basic russian (I've taken one year of russian) and I can get around. I've worked for a Linguistic computer company and also did translation work (English, French and Italian). And also tutored for a few years. In University I have a background in translation (languages) and psychology; and i've also dabbled for some time in art history and art restoration.
Is it possible for me to find a job in Russia without a BA? Do I have a chance???
Any advice would be GREATLY appreciated |

Yes. A lot of places will offer you work straight away if you have a TEFL qualification and some experience. You could try Language Link or even English First - the biggest schools. VJ-Study advertised on the jobs board on this site and I think BELS posted the link to the vacancies list of expat.ru website - a lot of small schools on there but they are mainly local, hourly paid recruiters.
What certificate do you have? I guess BKC tried to sell you a CELTA, right?

Ha ha, good old McEnglish schools
Yes, I think you have every chance. Don't mention the lack of a BA, or just make up an obscure degree. Don't sweat the small stuff, they'll never know. |

Thanks a bunch for the tips!
I find BKC rather frustrating, instead of considering my application they just sent a generic email trying to sell some sort of degree, which I already have. (actually i have a TESOL degree...how does it differ from a CELTA? Does the class last longer? Does it actually help?) I have a hard time believing that they hire teachers who didn't already get a degree from them ( and yes... i have read the posts about BKC)
I also believed that BKC had a monopoly in Russia, but now that I've checked out expat.ru and MANY other websites I came across some interesting schools.... One particular called Ptit Cref, i really like this one 'cause it's not only an english school, but they also have French class
My next obvious question is: Has anyone ever worked for them? Does anybody know about them?
Thanks again!! |

I really should stop plugging my site here... but... take a look at Kent's Master Index, and the school list on my site. I think you're also not the first to have had that impression. It was actually one of the reasons I started my site! |

I'm not sticking up for BKC in any way, but they hire a lot of people who don't get their qualification with them. A CELTA though is not a degree by any stretch of the imagination. If you're not sure what it is:

I've never heard of Petit Cref. Are you interested in teaching French as well as English? If so, I know 'Franglais' is a solid reliable place. I know the guy who set it up. Unfortunately I don't have their URL to hand but you should get it if you search or check the Master Index. |

Hi All!
Well, along the same line of questioning, "Do I have a chance at securing a teaching contract in Russia?" I have a BA in history with an English minor and a law degree (Juris Doctor) from Notre Dame. I don't have a teaching certificate. However, I am a native English speaker with litigation experience and am comfortable speaking in front of large groups of people. If anyone could recommend any specific schools or agencies that I might have a reasonable chance of success with I would be grateful. Thanks! |
