I was wondering if anyone could recommend me a backpackers hotel. What price should I expect? What can I get for around $10? Can anyone recommend me a good one?

I would highly recommend Big John's Guesthouse in Thonglor. It's close to the skytrain, in a less touristy/busy area of Bangkok, and I believe you can get a bed in the dorm rooms for about 180 baht (about 3.56 Euros/2.43 pounds/5.70 Canadian/5.89 Aussie/6.25 Kiwi/4.56 US dollars - you get the point). It's a cool, friendly joint with a good little restaurant on the main floor and an internet cafe around the corner, at which you get a free half hour of internet use a day when you're a guest. There are also double and triple rooms available, if you like. I believe they're all air conditioned. The website is www.bigjohnsworld.com. Great place!

Khao San Road is full of cheap guesthouses. Most have rooms in the price range 100-400 baht. (that's $2.50-$10). I suggest if you do head that way stay a little bit away from Khao San Road itself as it can be noisy and crowded. Plenty of nice places on the quieter sois (lanes) around there.

Big John's a nice guy, but I've never stayed at his guest house. Play a tune on the boombox upstairs, though, it used to be mine!

The good thing about Big Johns is that it ISN'T in Khao San. Khao San isn't very connected to the city and not good for looking for work (if you tell your employer you're staying there they'll tear up your app the minute you leave the room -- KSR = dirty short-time hippy).

There are a few places that rent rooms by the month opposite MBK (take the BTS to National Stadium and then head north from the station when you can) in the 10,000 to 20,000B range (most at 15,000 or so), and I'm sure they'll have daily rates, too.

For 10USD a day you should get air con, hot water shower, and smallish room.

Well I am not looking for work so it will not be a problem what employers think. I don't have much money so I am just trying to figure out how much I need. I was going to work in Hangzhou China for 6 weeks at a summer camp and now I find out that the camp has been cut down to 3 weeks. So now I will have from August 1-24 free and was thinking about heading to Bangkok. Can anyone tell me how much a round trip ticket from Shanghai to Bangkok would cost?

Dorms! No, ta.

For B250 - 300, you can have your own fan-cooled room in Soi 19 Sukhumwit Road, near BTS Asok. I stayed for a month!

Try SV Guest House, 19/35-36 Soi 19 Sukhumvit Rd
Tel 662-253-1747 / 253-0606

Ya

Kent F. Kruhoeffer, thanks. I can search online but I was more interested as to how much it would cost if I purchased it in China. I think that if you purchase the ticket from an American company you may have to pay more. When I went to Peru I was charged $300 for a connecting flight from Lima to Cusco but if you purchased the ticket when you were in Peru it only cost $100. So I was trying to see if anyone could give me advice on purchasing the ticket in China. (I know this is the Thailand discussion board). I will post the question on the China off-topic page as well.

Understood. Wink

Yeah; the $658 does seem kinda steep.

Good luck from within China !
