Hi everyone,

It looks like I won't be able to get to Istanbul until late, late August or early September. Can anyone tell me if this puts me at a major disadvantage in terms of finding work? When does the academic calendar begin in Turkey, and when is hiring season in full force?

If it's better to be there by early August, I can try to arrange that.

I'm looking forward to all of your responses. Thanks in advance!

language schools hire throughout the year, but the biggest bump in hiring is late Aug/Sept/Oct. They don't have academic calendars. Univs and koleji do, however.

what kind of money can one expect to pick up teaching about 100-120 hours a month at a language school? Do schools like English Time have day and evening classes? BTw, I have a BA, a Cert. TESL, and a PGCE; plus 4 years experience.

With your real qualifications don`t waste your time with any of the language schools. You would be hopelessly over qualified and would be apalled at the dross you would be working with.

Aah 31, I see your little break from the board did nothing for your mood. There must be something else you can do with your life?

So is it worth it to just come to Turkey and hope to get something, is this realistic? Many of you say to go to real schools if you have quals such as BA, Cert TESL, and a PGCE, but what real schools are you talking about? Do you mean to just canvass on arrival, or write to schools with application letters before arriving? Can you give a list of these schools or a web page where they are found?

Thanks so much!!

Eng. Time has said they pay 15 YTL an hour for new teachers. A pathetic salary if you are only paid per hour and are experienced to boot.

British Eng. pays better. Berlitz will definitley pay better but you have to negotiate, they will try to pay you at the low end of the scale, so be tough if you think you are worth it.

15 an hour is only for new teachers. Us experienced teachers get more.

Well I've been told by the staff there that even a returning experienced teacher will have to start at 15 tl/hr.

So if you were earning much more and are more experienced...yes take a break ....come back and earn less.

However, a friend of mine took a three month break, came back and started up from where he had left off...it wasn't that much though about 15.5.

However, if ET is contradicting itself, this wouldn't suprise me in the least.

Perhaps someone else could confirm the hourly wage rates because I have not heard anything about hourly wage rate cuts. 15 an hour is not enough when you take into account holidays and the summer.

We pay 20/25 an hour depending on experience. I know of one company that pays 35 working in mainly banking English. There will be a new company opening up after the summer and I have been assured that they will pay more than everwhere else. (UK DELTA or MA holders only for f/t)

31 I'm surprised you're not aware of ET's infamous effort to lower salaries last year. However, I've gleaned that some of the crap that's done at the Taks. Branch isn't necessarilly done at other branches.

Earning around 25 or more per hr. is certainly possible. One of my friends has such a job. It's a small co. she works less hours and makes the same or more money than before. You have to know how to shop around. And such jobs won't always be posted on the net.
