Within a year i will be graduating from college with a major in Secondary education and hopefully a minor in Spanish. I dont want to jump into the work force here without taking time first to travel and help others. I am already able to speak conversational Spanish and am passionate about learning about the Latin American cultures. I recently heard about ESL positions and after some thought realized I would be well suited to it. I love traveling and often do so in tough conditions. I love an adventure and I have also worked in the construction industry throughout my schooling so I bring those skills which would be helpful in a more rural location. Im not sure what im looking for but I would love some direction from those of you who are experienced in this field. I would even consider volunteer work for short periods of time jsut to get the experience. Any contacts or suggestions are more than welcome. Thanks, Erik

Great enthusiasm and looks like you have some good skills going.

What about the Peace Corps?

Yeah, I was going to suggest the Peace Corps as well. There's quite a commitment attached to it but it seems like the experience you're looking for. Lots of opportunities in rural communities in L.A, that's for sure.

Thanks for the suggestion, but the whole commitment thing is a bit of a turn off. I wanted to start out doing something shorter just to get a feel for it then if i find thats a direction I like look into peace corps. What I really want is something like an extended missions trip without any relgion. I have another year though...so ive got time to find something

There are several non-religious missions in the Dominican Republic.

Go to www.DR1.com/forums and do a search.
