In most cases schools will start processing your work permit and ARC after you actually start working for them, not before. Your plan is a good one, and probably the best way for everyone to ensure that there are no misunderstandings or surprises, but I am not sure that many schools would do things this way. They may do this if you ask and explain your reasons.
Although it is illegal to work in Taiwan without an appropriate work permit, there are strong indications that the CLA understands and accepts that teachers will commence work while their work permit is being processed. While I doubt that you would ever get this in writing from the CLA, the indications include the fact that work permit applications are now backdated to the date the application is received and not when they are approved. The only explanation for this is that they are backdating to cover the worker for that period of time. I know personally of teachers who have been caught working while their work permits were being processed and in these cases the authorities took no action but did return a few weeks later to check that the paperwork was now in order.
The above is just my opinion of the situation but I doubt that your experiences would vary too much from the above.
Not sure if it was mentioned before but you will forfeit 20% taxes until the end of the year if you start working in August or September. |
