Am currently working for CFBT in Brunei. Check out the website. www.cfbt.org. Generally good employers. Not bad money. You have to be a qualified secondary school teacher in your own country. EFL qualifications and M.A's etc are not enough on their own. I've been here a long time, and see no reason to move on yet. Especially good for families, not so good for young singles in search of a good time. |

AKPO, you said the money was good but i read that it pays only $2,400 AUD ($3000 BD) a month! compare that to twice the wage in Australia for teaching. It seems like quite a sacrifice to make in terms of money. The website says that wages go up to $3500 AUD a month, but what do they base this on? |

I've noticed that this outfit has been posting and re-posting their advertisement on TEFL.com. Does their constant re-posting indicate a lack of qualified applicants or is this pretty normal? Would it be worth applying with only a BA + CELTA on the off chance they don't receive enough applications from "qualified" teachers? |

No, as it wouldn't get past the government screeners who set the rules regading qualifications. I imagine the reason they have trouble recruiting is the starting salary and the fact that it is most suited to teaching couples. |

Maybe also the fact that Brunei doesn't employ Americans? |

I worked with a real character a couple of years ago-his nickname was Wild Bill. He was asked to leave and gave 3 months notice. He had I guess twenty years plus teaching experience but only a BA in English. We heard later that he got a teacher trainer/manager job with CFBT in Malaysia so I guess the qualifications are not set in stone. |

CfBT Malaysia is in quite a mess, they are hiring anyone, Americans included.
There are many problems with the admin, though, people getting posted in the middle of nowhere with little support, and the bosses in Kuala Lumpur have little clue about life in the rest of the country. They fly in and fly out and stay at the best hotels in town, and thats about all they do (besides sending hundreds of emails telling teachers to clean out their email box because it is full of emails!).
So if you like red tape, a government sinecure and doing everything at the last minute, come on down to Malaysia.... |

I've recently been thinking about applying with CfBT Malaysia for a stint. It sounds as if you speak of this place from first-hand knowldedge.
Do you think it is feasible to go with wife and two small children for a couple of years? |
