I've been in touch with Jiayiung U. (in Meizhou City in Guangdong), with the Group Leader of Foreign Teachers, about a teaching job for the fall. The pay is so-so (4000 RMB for those with MAs) and the class sizes seem rather large to me (40-50 for classes for English majors; 55-65 for non-major classes). The person I've been writing to has been very upfront about both the good and the not-so-good aspects of the job. If anyone has first-hand knowledge of this school and Meizhou, please write!!

I came close to accepting a job there. It seemed like a good gig at the time. I was on board but the admin didn't sent me the required documents on time. They also didn't send me the names and email addresses of former or current teachers as were promised. Alarm bells should always ring when these things happen,. So, I ditched them. The front guy who was shilling for them seemed like a really good guy though. As I remember, he was working at a orphanage part time.

Sorry, as was promised. I've been up all night.

Thanks for letting me know about your experiences with this school. I agree that the guy I've been in touch with seems like a good person. When did all of this happen to you?

My last contact with the university was in June, 2004. It seemed like a good place to work. I was in contact with a guy whose name was Arnie. He seemed like a solid, honest person and it seemed like a good place to work. Again, the Chinese admin were slow in sending the letters of invitation and the other paper work. They also didn't send the email addresses of current and former teachers. I would have gone to teach there otherwise. Did they send you email addresses and phone numbers of other foreign teachers?

Their contact person now is Don Akers. One reason I've been considering this job (in spite of the big classes) is that he's been so agreeable and efficient about answering my questions. He even apologized for asking me how old I am (almost 60) because of a government-imposed upper age limit on hiring! I haven't gotten around to asking for names and e-mails of current teachers yet. Would it be cool to do that before a job offer is made?

Many thanks.

I have been considering this school too. I didn't know about the class size, but the overall income sounds good to me. I agree that Don Akers has been good at answering questions and he did give me an email address, but I noticed that it was a name that was listed as the previous contact so I don't know how good his information will be.
