Don't you find modern sites a bit souless and lacking in character?

Yes. Although the sites cleaner and quieter and the flats are more like what I'm used to size and floor-plan-wise, and although there are trees and grass and flowers and different kinds of birds, sometimes I look out my site window and, except for the ezan, I could be anywhere in the world.

However, we do have a pair of owls out here. So it's not all bad...

I might as well be another country for all the hassle it takes to go somewhere interesting. On the other hand, the neighbors all seem to have better things to do than stare at me. Out here on the perimeter the women have jobs.

I live in Erenk�y on the Asian side and no one stares at me and I'd say a good percentage of the women work (my across-the-hall neighbour is a teacher too). It has a lovely-yet-non-invasive village feel to it as well. I can walk everywhere (ie work, and if ambitious, Kadikoy), there is a bazaar, and it is pretty green by Istanbul standards.

I would love to live on the Asia side. Everything seems better over there. If my job wasn't at almost the farthest possible point from Asia, and my husband's job weren't in Zeytinburnu I'd be there in a flash.

Though maybe someday I can use my wifely wiles to convince him to move the office and ourselves over there. I think one of the things I like about the site here is that the attitude overall is generally more 'Asian'....

Your dmb, a big modern site like Ataşhier, is soul less. You could be living in any big city anywhere.
On the other hand it is great for kids, O.K if you have got the money you can buy a place in one of the one of the smaller sites below the E5 road around Bostan�i or Kozyatagı. Still its not like living in Taksim or even Moda.

In the end if your single you can live in a high rent small central place, but if you've got a family or plan to, then really you have to move out. Being near the Pubs and Bars for some sad reason means less to you than having a park near by or better yet a garden for the kids.
