|
|
Hi there,
I am a new member of Daves cafe and I love it!
I am looking for an English teaching job in Latin America for this summer (=July/August 2005).
I have experience as an English teacher in the Netherlands in secondary education (pupils aged 12-17) on different levels. I really like teaching and love the English language.
I do speak basic Spanish and am willing to improve this.
I have a bachelors degree in Marketing and Economics (I studied Business and Languages), and next year (June 2006) I will have my bachelors degree in education (comparable to TEFL).
Can anyone give me tips concerning finding a paid teaching job for this short period? Is it available at all?! I do not have the funds to work as a volunteer right now..
Any reaction is welcome!
Regards,
Judith |

Are you sure that any reaction is welcome? Because I'm afraid that I'm not the bearer of good news. There may be exceptions, but most people I know here have taken 2-3 months to get enough teaching hours together to be making a living. Set up costs are not high here, but neither are wages, and really, it's likely that you wouldn't recoup your startup costs working less that 6 months to a year. If you don't have the money to volunteer, I suspect that you'll find it very hard to manage a 2 month teaching stint in South America.
Some countries do have organisations that offer summer camps for young people, which would probably be your best bet, if I haven't disheartened you completely. I don't know a lot about that, but I've heard that Argentina might be the spot. (Matt? Any ideas?)
But my most honest advice is that I would try to save some cash back in your own country, and come back next year when you have more money and time.
Regards,
Justin |

You'd never make back your costs here in Argentina given that a 2 month return flight from europe is around $1000 and the wages here are around $5 an hour and can take a fair while to build up. Also, winter holidays are in july so hours drop off teaching kids. And winter here isn't all that much fun, it's quite cold and july is the worst month.
Other than that, Buenos Aires is the best city in the world and definitely a place to just come and visit some time. Just do it with a bit of cash and don't worry about work... |

judith reining, if you are looking for a summer gig then you would be better off trying China. I will be working at a summer camp in China this summer. They pay for room and board and you would earn around $200 U.S. a week. There are also some jobs in Korea but since you are not a native speaker you will probably have a hard time getting a short term job in Korea. |

hello Justin, Matt and JZ,
thanks for your reply!
thanks to your comments and other people's I'v figured out now, that getting a paid teaching job for this summer will be very unlikely. but that's ok! I've decided to go anyway. I'll just buy a ticket to either Mexico-city or Peru (I'm not sure yet). I'll see how long I can stay with the money I've got. I'm sure I can stick it out for 1 month... and if I do find a job (either in teaching or in tourism or whatever), I could always stay longer!
I'm really looking forward to it. I've been wanting to go to LA for years now. I went to Africa last year (Sierra Leone) and loved it, too. Is it true that, once you've visited LA, you'll never want to go home again???
cheers,
Judith |

Yes! One college studying abroad experience was all it took and I never wanted to go back. Lots of luck, Judith. |

|

hi there,
just to let you know...I found a teaching job for 2 months in Huancayo, Peru!
I'm so happy. I will be flying in 2 weeks and stay till September. I will be teaching English at UK El Britanico, a language school. I will teach an advanced class on Phonetics and teaching methods. possibly I will get more classes, but we'll decide once I get there.
I found it through this forum! I read a message by another Judith (in de andes, she's also in this forum) and I replied to the school directly. it's so great, love it when it works like this.
just wanted to thank you for all the tips and I'm thinking of making my own weblog, so you can see/read my experiences. if I do, I'll let you know through this forum.
so there are possibilities! just keep on searching and yes, I think I am lucky.
thanks and all the best,
Judith Reining |
