an estimated 10,000 people from different walks of life turned out to pay their last respects to the man better known as the "Mosquito Brother."

That's a bigger turn out than any funeral in the history of Taiwan.

Quote:
Among the mourners to crowd around the Taipei First Municipal Funeral Home were organized crime figures from Hong Kong, Macau and Japan, local entertainers and city politicians.

This funeral is a huge black eye for Taiwan. Yes, mobs exist elsewhere, but they do not operate as overtly and with as much impunity as they do here. It's a reminder that, despite all the snazzy veneers and sky scrapers in places like Taipei, this is still a place with a large amount of lawlessness about it.

Agreed. It is not one of Taiwan's proudest days. Embarassed

But as one of the other posters points out, this is not uniquely a Taiwan experience.

I agree - a mere 10,000 at a funeral is pretty pathetic compared with the organized crime in other countries.

Pardon my ignorance, folks, but can anyone give a concrete example of such an event in another country? I like to keep up on international news and yet I simply cannot remember anything like this happening in another country, expecially ones that claim to be "developed."

And in the United States??? Really now!

Of course, my lack of memory could just be creeping old age but please support your contentions.

I think TaoyuanSteve is a lot closer to the truth than the rest of you.

Everyone has a right to a funeral. Even convicted serial killers are given small ceremony and head stone. Maybe more than they deserve but the fact is everyone has or had a mother or someone who cared for the deceased no matter what wrongs they may have committed in life.
The problem here on Taiwan is that the government is often more corrupt than the organized crime elements and in many cases they are one in the same. The racist and corrupt government on Taiwan is unwilling or unable to do it's job and protect the people residing on Taiwan. The local inhabitants are forced to turn to criminal gangs and the use of quanxi to solve their problems.
The only difference between government officials and the gang leaders is that mob bosses appoint themselves and local politicians are appointed by the mob bosses, often they are the same person.
On Taiwan it is the most corrupt who are the most influential and respected by the corrupt society that is modern Taiwan.
Taiwan is not a developing country it is an undeveloping country.
Welcome to Taiwan!
A.

Although I don't think everyone in the US saw Gotti as a hero.

Quote:
The crowd was surely as various as America. Some had contempt for Gotti and thought the media had gone too far in the intense coverage. "A guy works all his life, you ever write a word about him?" one man said. "This was a bum, and look at this scene." Another said, "You ass me, he shudda been President."

And I expect the same was true in Taiwan concerning Hsu Hai-ching.

The difference between "hundreds" and "thousands" is exponential. The difference is even more amazing when you factor in the percentage of the total (nation) population the numbers represent

FYI: Gotti's ex-wife now has her own reality show called "Growing Up Gotti."

Amazing.

Charles 'Pretty Boy' Floyd, a Chicago gangster of the 1930s, had 20,000 attend his funeral in the US.

Of course, you may or may not recognise the US in the 1930s as a country claiming to be 'developed'.

John Gotti had 100 cars in his funeral cavalcade. US mobster Frankie Yale, in 1928, had 300 in his.

The Yakuzara are open in Japan. In fact, they even wear a type of uniform to stick out.Black suit with gold jewelry and drive black benz with tinted windows. Many believe there is a secret agreement the Yakuzara have with the government, they do not import guns or drugs and the government pretty much leaves them alone.

In Melbourne (Australia), where I used to live, the police knew the names of almost all the key criminals in the local big gangs. They never did anything, because they couldn't.

In the last 6 years open warfare broke out between several of the gangs, with gang leaders being shot in cold blood in public, in full view of tens or even hundreds of witnesses - at restaurants, on the street, even at a racetrack.

The result? No result. The police are powerless. If you're a gang member, you can march down the street and shoot someone in the head with 50 witnesses watching you, and just walk away. You won't have any problems.

Australia is a great place for organised crime, especially Melbourne. Which is why so many of the European gangs have moved in. You can do what you like, and even if the police know who you are they won't touch you - because they can't.
