What are some of the better TEFL schools (to get the certificate/diploma) in Europe?
Is the Caledonian School of any recognition?
I'd like to travel around quite a bit to test the waters but am seeking to spend a year in various countries in Europe to find one that I love, and probably even a stint through Asia for a while. I hear HK and China are incredible if you make use of your resources. |

Most British councils offer a CELTA program. And there is ITI here in Istanbul(shameless advertising, I know). If you are American then getting work here wouldn't be a problem as Turkey isn't in the EU. |

A mate of mine did the dip at ITI in Istanbul during the early-mid 90s and he told me this great anecdote. After they finished the exam they all went on an almighty bar crawl round Istanbul to celebrate the year`s work being over and to quench their thirst after a 3 and a half hour exam. They were joined a few hours into the bar crawl by the ITI director and main course tutor and ended up late evening in a bar on the Asian side of the city. My mate being pretty hammered looked down and realised that the director`s bag was under the table, open and contained all their exam papers that were due to be sent to Cambridge. My mate used to tell this story and say what if they had been lost. |

Hmm, I doubt your mate's story. |

No it is true. But fair enough he is married to one of your countrywomen now and has probably been tamed. PM me if you want names, dates and where they ended up. I could also email my mate for more info on the story. |

I'm not sure what ITI is ... maybe someone could elaborate?
And does anyone have any suggestions on schools within mainland Europe? Be it Eastern, Western, or Central. |

Elaboration:
The ITTI stands for the International Teacher Training Institute which is based in a tiny flat in a back street in Istanbul. Somewhere along the line they lost one of the Ts. It is not international and is not an institute. It offers the DELTA part time and does the the CELTA part time. You could have a look at its website if it worked. BTW the CELTA will set you back 900 pounds.I have no idea why dmb mentioned it as it is totally irrelevent to your situation as it only offers a part time course, usually done by teflers already tefling in Istanbul. |

This centre has the dubious honour of being the cheapest in the world for C/DELTA. They do intensive or normal courses. Based in Sofia, BG.
Having done the course, I'd say that it was well-run, but for some of the guys who didn't speak the local language it was a bit strange being unable to communicate with all and sundry. Personally I thought it showed them the other side of things. |

Would it be worthwhile for me to go ahead and get certified, then teach EFL and tutor at my college so when I'm ready to travel abroad that I'm already set with a CELTA Certificate and experience? |

If you mean "instead of getting a degree", I don't think so. If you mean "while studying for a degree", definitely. It will give you lots of job options. |

Oh yea, definitely WITH my degree! I should have worded that better, I apologize.
I meant say during the Summer of my Freshman year to travel abroad and recieve my CELTA certification, and then come back and tutor at my college within the Writing Center and English Department -- graduate college, go abroad for 1-2 years perhaps, return to do Graduate school, and then pursue my options from there.
Of course this could all play out different, it just depends on how my life plays out ... but that's another matter in itself. |

Oh, very supportive and encouraging! Give the lad a break! He's showing some responsibility in going for qualifications and "tutoring" is a real possibility in many uni's - nobody's going to pretend he's a qualified teacher at that stage, but there shojuld be some possibilities.
Take no notice, balatro - go for it, and keep looking for all the angles. |

What in the world are you talking about? Just about every University in the USA has a Writing and English Center staffed by Professors and Student Tutors! I'm not talking about claiming myself as a Teacher but as a Tutor -- two very distinct, yet different areas. Most centers, mine included even pay students to spend their time there and help other students with their writing and conversational skills. I believe my particular University pays $9.00/hour for students to tutor other students.
What I said, if you had bothered to read it was that I would do my Freshman year of college, go to a CELTA program, then return to finish my degree while tutoring students at my COLLEGE! I said nothing about going abroad and teaching with only 1 year of college or teaching English at a college with only 1 year of college, only that I would tutor.
Which all happens to be the same exact things I did in HS for 3 years, tutoring Spanish kids in my HS's writing and conversation program afterschool. I had taken an Honors English in 9th grade and maintained a perfect 100% the whole term, I petitioned to take 10th grade English II - Honors in the 2nd term of my 9th grade year due to my high scores and was accepted and once again maintained a perfect 100%. My 10th grade year I took both AP English courses (Literature and Language), kept an A in the courses, and got a 5/5 on both exams. My 11th and 12th grade years I took advanced undergraduate courses in English (as well as Physics and History) at Wake Forest University through a dual enrollment between my HS and WFU (My high school and WFU are both in Winston-Salem, NC).
I don't mean to gloat but I'm rather educated compared to most "one year college students with mickey mouse degrees" -- and I personally, others may disagree, find no CELTA program to be a mickey mouse disagree. I don't enjoy being talked down to one bit without just cause. |
