The ESL industry is, for the most part, an unregulated industry. This is particularly true in China.
No matter how careful you are, no matter how much advance info you obtain, at least in China a NEWBIE has a most excellent chance of getting ripped off by their first employer. This risk can be reduced significantly if your first employer is a public uni that has a history of employing multiple foreign experts over a period of several years.
Most of the experienced posters on the China forum have had their initiation into China's ESL through a bad first experience. It has made them both better people and better teachers.
So, if you can go with the flow and remember that flexible people do not break, take any old first job and learn from your bad experience. If you want a safe experience, teach at a public uni for less money, or stay home. |
