Hi everyone.

I was wondering about any opportunities to teach or volunteer in Peru. I am not really looking for anything until May of next year.. just wanted to see what options I have. I've heard that you don't really need an ESL certificate to teach in Peru so I'm hoping there are at least a few options. I'm in third year university (Simon Fraser University in Canada) and I have taken some spanish classes so my level of Spanish is Fair.

So basically something that doesn't require an ESL certificate. I was hoping to spend a year or more in Peru. I was thinking of volunteering for Bruce Peru but I've heard some bad things about them.. does anyone know anything?

Also, if there are any volunteer positions that provide somewhere to live for cheap. I won't have much money and I was hoping to have something that pays or is a couple hundred a month.

Sorry if this is confusing.. I'm tired and slow tonight Very Happy

Any info would be VERY much appreciated! Thanks!

The bad part of volunteering is that they usually require you to pay heaps of money. But try volunteerabroad.com

A lot of these 'volunteer' groups charge exorbitant fees for the priviledge of working for them. If you're going to work overseas, why not have the money going into _your_ pocket instead of some middleman's?

It would be nice but I'm not sure of any jobs without a degree/certificate. If you know of any I'd love to hear em!

Why don't you finish your B.A. and then find a job in Peru that pays? Then you will earn $400 a month instead of paying someone $290 a month.

im impatient. Embarassed

sides, i like volunteering. if I can't find a paying job maybe ill just stay shorter. I think volunteering would look good on a resume and there's the possibility of finding something when I'm there because I've heard jobs without a B.A. are out there.

Okay here's another question for you guys:

I've been doing some research on TEFL certification and most places I've seen say you don't need a B.A. to get the TEFL. Is this true? How do you know whether a certificate is credible or not? Anyone have any recommendations?

Many schools claim you need a bachelors degree - but then somehow seem to allow non-degree holders to sign up.
CELTA and Trinity are known names in TEFL certificates, so some schools prefer those. Other schools ask that you have a 4-week TEFL certificate without specifying any particular name.
(And the bottom-rung schools tend not to care if you have any certification at all.)
