I have a question that may seem silly to some. I have heard that is it harder for a person that is Muslim and american to find work in the ME. Has anyone found this to be true? If so, does anyone know why?

Well, Lynn, I have worked with quite a few American Muslims through the years, so many have succeeded. I think if you are looking at Primary and Middle Schools, it should be more of a plus than a minus.

Hi Lynne,

Well from my wife and I have had unpleasant experiences. We have been interviewed in the UK many times but do not get the job when they find out that my wife wears the Headscarf. I have recently had a meeting with a recruiting firm in Leeds and the director of the firm informed me, after I had asked him to be frank as to what problems we would be facing, that I was at a disadvantage that I was brown, a Muslim and have a wife that wears a headscarf.

BUT I have not let that bother me as I know there are many success stories and I know of few Muslims who have not had problems.

In short I believe that our choice is to try or not to try and the rest is not in our hands and in my opinion If Allah wills it then it will happen.

Allah is the best of planners but we still have to make the best efforts to achieve the results.

Just my opinion

Hajiatif

As a converted muslim from christianity, it seems to make people happy when you tell them. This is what it is like in Arabic countries but I don't know for the rest of the world.

I know that even here in Algeria, some schools have been know to ignore applicants with headscarves.

This thread will probably be pulled soon as well.

If you are trained and qualified, then there should be no problem.

If you are not, then you should not be considered for the job.

Hi hector,

What did you mean, when you said this "This thread will probably be pulled soon as well."?

I thought only moderators could delete other people's posts, and they usually leave a note of explanation when they do so. What's going on here?

It never ceases to amaze me how some posters insist on putting words into other people's mouths.
Hector said "This thread will probably be pulled soon as well." He did not say "This thread should be pulled," or "I think this thread should be pulled."
It doesn't take a genius to work out the meaning there: he believed that someone - by implication a moderator - would pull the thread. He didn't advocate such a course of action, and yet lionbrain called him a dictator.
One would expect contributors to an EFL forum to have a reasonable degree of reading comprehension - or am I being too optimistic?

Yes, a thread seems to have been pulled because they had moved away from English teaching into trading rants on cultures and religions. And then some people decided to add threads discussing what a moderator should or shouldn't be able to do. Anyone who has been here awhile knows that they don't allow you to discuss the rules of the board. It's a private board and they get to set all the rules.

Let's avoid having this thread go the same route. It started out with a good question.
