I'm planning a little trip to Korea and was wondering if anyone could give me the 411 on decent places to stay. Ideally I'm shooting for a nice hostel in a easily accessible central area with single room options. I'm willing to pay more for a hotel if need be but i would like to keep my costs beneath 7,500 Yen a night.

I know this post is out of place here but I couldn't get into the Korean forum.

Itaewon. don't pay more than Y5000 per night. Many to choose from. Ask for 'Yagwon'. It's Korean for the sort of place you're looking for, or simply 'Motel'.

I like the Emerald hotel. It is sort of old, but has character and it is cheap and clean with beds and full baths in all the rooms. When we stayed it was 25 000 won per night, but that doubles on big holidays like New Year's eve. It is one block from the Jongno 2 ga subway stop - the owner will meet you at the subway exit if you call ahead and ask him for directions(743-2001). It is right by the Tagpol park area which is quite interesting, and not too far from the Gwanhwamun area where there is a lot of shopping and city hall.

I stayed at this place and found it good for the price. It's close to a subway and the owner speaks English very well and is really helpful.

Thanks a bunch guys, I've been putting this off to the last minute so anywhere I can cut a few corners is great.

Hi Easyasabc

Kim's guest house looks pretty good. Do you know if they take late check ins. My flight arrives at Incheon at 9:30pm so it could get complicated if they don't.

I'm not sure because I got there in the middle of the day. They spoke English well enough that you could call or e-mail them and ask and they'd be able to understand.

HI!

I live in Seoul, speak Korean, travel around Korea a lot. You don't have much to worry about. Even expensive hotels in Korea are pretty moderately priced. In Japan you really have to watch out, but Korea has a lot more freedom. You show up and start snooping around. There are some great places you can stumble into. Love hotels with the works. Only 3000 yen. Offical Youth hostels generally suck because they're so freakin' expensive (I can't explain this). There are several nonoffical YH in Korean that are nice. Travelers A and Backpackers come to mind. Both are centrally located. They're alright. I stayed in the Travelers A for a month.

As I said, you'll have a lot of freedom. Taxi's are cheep too. Even late at nice, for a long distance, is only 1000-1500 yen. Great palces to drink. Great places to dance. Korean food is awesome. Have fun!
