Hello,
I know this topic has been posted and probably re-posted, but I am still unclear on the matter. I want to come teach in Turkey in December/January. Does that mean I would miss the main hiring period? Are jobs likely to be scarce at this time or at least somewhat available?
thanks

December/January is not the hiring season but most language schools (including ours) have increasing number of students so we might need teachers for our branches as well ...PM me too.
Entrailicus,
thank you for your respect and the legal usage of the expression "crap of the crop" |

Better to come post-bayram in December than in the summer looking to teach. Best time, obviously, is September/October, but I am sure you will get a job in one of the private language schools. To say the least, best to contact someone like Molly at ET around the time you are looking to get a better idea. |

[quote="Entrailicus"]You'll be able to get a job but it might be from the 'crap of the crop*' rather than the cream. There are several people who post here who'll be able to advise you. PM me for info.
Please could you provide a list of the cream tefl jobs in Istanbul. |

G'day all,
I've been doing the old grad diploma in education (secondary) in Australia this year, taking the TESL strand and LOTE Indonesian. I want to do a CELTA course as well, because I know it will give me the grammar side much more than my ESL curriculum studies have.
The problem is, CELTA is $2000 here. I've been working my **** off trying to save while I study. But of course I can't work while doing my 2 pracs (4 weeks each, full time). I can't wait to finish this crappy grad dip (in november), so I can travel and work. I'm very tempted to just go for it, and worry about doing CELTA later. I know it's valuable. I probably should have just done CELTA instead of doing the grad dip. What do you think? I think Molly is going to say "do the CELTA".
How worthwhile is my grad dip going to be if I come over without CELTA?
Should I put the trip off a while and do the cert here? ARRGG. I want to jump on a plane right now! |

I just remembered, DMB already told me to be legal in Turkey I will have to have done CELTA. So that answers that dumb question of mine. Sorry |

Ash you don't get taught too much grammar on the CELTA. you learn it when you start teaching! |

Ah. Well, my students just loved my coverage of direct speech last week. (not.) I tried so hard, using all the wonderful strategies I've been learning and one of them just dozed on her desk.
I recently met a girl doing the same grad dip as me. She'd just finished CELTA and she was a major grammar head, and she said they'd really pushed it in her CELTA course. Maybe it varies a little bit from place to place? Where do you do your cert, DMB? I think it costs the same no matter where I go, right? |

Hey! Nice avatar Yaramaz!
To answer your question, we are working on January at this stage although if finances allow we will certainly come sooner. I officially finish my education diploma in November. Want to work CELTA in somewhere...
Can't wait to come back, at least for a visit if not to work. This time my partner in crime will be with me all the way, so I won't feel the need to rush back home.
Looking forward to catching up! BTW, I like yr website Yaramaz |
