I've been looking around for suitable openings and there is talk about a new institute (in the building stage just now).
Seeb's a good place for a centre judging by the cars outside the BC and Polyglot.
Don't know exactly where it is - but surely it's not ELS?
Anyone got any information? |

I have also heard that there is a new centre opening. It's somewhere near Polyglot. Nice location for students - not great for teachers. I hope they can get people to go all the way out there.
Any idea who they are? |

Am also hearing very interesting things. Small EFL community. Word goes around very quickly about EVERYTHING!
I am about to mix metaphors. Ready?
These guys, if what I hear is correct, will "pick up all the marbles" and "clean the clocks" of the other institutes.
Good stuff for non-native speakers.
"Blease explain 'cleaning the clocks'?" |

I have seen the place and it's actually rather nice (if you like tiles). It's being run by a South African woman, and it's near the big mosque in Al Heil. |

Thanks, OLM! I keep hearing these great things about it and suspect it will become a major player. Wonder if they need any part-timers and where one would apply? If you find out, could you do a post and let interested parties know by PM? Thanks... |

They are looking for teachers, mainly for summer school. If you phone 198 they should have the telephone number. |

Perhaps a small point - but what's it called?
Also what happened to the British Council in Seeb? It seems to be ELS now. |

The BC had to close in Al Hail due to 'security concerns' - it was an international British Council decision to close all centers that aren't up to the building security standards set out by the Br. govt. Even centers in Japan had to close - it's a bit silly but such is life these days. They also closed their little kindregarten in M.Q. for the same reasons. I heard it was mainly due to the increase in violence, especially incidents like the one in Beslan with the school children.
ELS has taken over the building and offer the same situation - part time work, paid every 4 week session, same students, similar program etc...
The other new center has been opened by a woman who used to work for CfBT and the reason she could was somehow she secured the solid Shell contract from CfBT to tranfer over. Whether or not it will 'clean the clocks' of the other major centers, will have to be seen. Teaching and running the business of a language school are very distinct oppositions.

Thanks for the info on BC - rather sad news in such a safe country.
Re the new centre - what's it called?
I didn't understand the remarks about the 'solid Shell contract' - I thought it went out to tender (a friend who works for another institute worked on the tender document and had great hopes of getting the work) but maybe I'm wrong.
We'll wait and see - Hawthorne seems to have proved that new companies can do very well and Seeb is a good area for a training centre. |

That's not very British. Shouldn't that be CENTRES? |

But he's probably bi-dialectal... and trying to impress you.
The BC seems to be in a budget crunch these days. I hear of a number of their projects shutting down.
It seems strange to me that sleepy ole Seeb seems to be booming Language School territory these days.

Hi VS
Seeb and surrounding areas are where a high percentage of the Omani population live - it's not so sleepy these days - two shopping malls and a new flyover being built.
The BC Seeb always was always very busy and Polyglot Al Hail continues to pack them in.
It's a good location - all the centres have to do is look after the clients. |

Yes, I had heard from SQU friends that Seeb area was growing rapidly. I never had any reason to head out that way my last stint in Oman since I was living and working farther in towards Muscat.
When I was at SQU in the late 80's, it was a small fishing village still.
