hey guys
Im looking into WESTGATE and was hoping somebody could gimme a briefing on what its like.
Is it possible to go with westgate and stay for the 3 months..then once finished..leave and find other work..without visa problems and all that buiseness.Im looking into the young learner programme they have on line.Anyone out there doing it?
It just sounds like a good way to get into Japan without committing to a year contract with an organisation like Jet or NOVA etc.. but then again..i know nothing and thats why im asking!!
Any advice on WESTGATE schools, the teaching, the company...anything... would be helpful.
THANKS guys
Kerryn in Bangkok

Can't help you much, I'm afraid, but thought you'd like to know you're not the only one ... I've just filled in the online app'n form for Westgate's 3-month University prog. in Tokyo.

From the look of the website, it all looks pretty professional and above-board, but then it would, wouldn't it?

Anyone got anything to put our minds at rest?

From this testimonial, Westgate sounds like a great place to teach at. I guess it depends on what you are expecting, and what your alternatives are.

Yeah everything is relative I guess. This doesn't sound too great from my perspective though:(from the above link)

Fourthly, Westgate rip you off with their accommodation. I originally stayed by myself in a 1 LDK close to the University until I couldn`t bear it and moved out to live with a friend. A friend who was, fortunately, renting out a 2 LDK which cost less than the one I was occupying in originally.

This is nothing new in the biz though: The rent scam!

Fifth, Westgate just seem so distrusting of teachers. They check up (mostly your PC of course) on everything, they give you a cellphone with which you can only call them and nobody else and to top it off, the leaving party that you have on the final day requires a supervisor present at all times. What is up with that?

Good question.

Like I said, you and your other collegues are left to your own devices, I got into trouble because I asked a question to the Human Resources Director instead of addressing it to my PC.

What's up with the paranid shogun management?

There are other concerns raised in the link and I defitely wouldn't call Westgate "professional."

Wow! Thanks for the link, guys!

I'm off now to contribute to this old Westgate thread:

Yeah, but what do you expect? For a short-term stint, they find you a place, furnish it, pay key money, install phone, etc. Might be cheaper to DIY, but for THREE months? To their credit, they suggest that you arrange your own accomodation if you don't like their deal. Perhaps in a smaller city the price is high, but for Tokyo their prices are not out of line at all.

Good question.

If Westgate is paying for the mobile, why can't they call the shots with its use? And what are you doing at your leaving party that you don't want a supervisor to see? Sounds like kids wanting to party without the parents around. Most places that I know would want to ensure that the party runs problem-free, and a supervisor on site would ensure that.

It's called "chain-of-command", and it is found in many countries, in many cultures. Why go above your PC and annoy him/her like that, make the PC look bad? Not very good etiquette, especially in Japan.

There are a lot of schools around the world, and many of them aren't very professional either. Westgate is no better, no worse.
