So, I've exhausted my reasearch. What, pray tell, is the best course of action to find a job in Japan? Come over on a "vacation"? Sign up with one of the big 4 to get my foot in the door? Take a job sight unseen? I've checked the stickies, read all of the info on NOVA, AEON, Jet, byw who's the 4th? Hess?

There are a few things to consider--how much money do you have to support yourself while you search, if you choose to fly to Japan first? How spontaneous a person are you? (Personally, I feel much safer lining something up first rather than just showing up, but that limits your options).

Have you checked the job board on this forum? There are loads of listings for Japan, and a lot of them will, I think, do phone interviews. I had three phone interviews and was offered three jobs before I ever got on a plane to Japan. Generally, though, there is more available once you are there.

JET is not one of the big 4 as its a government sponsored exchange program. You can only apply once a year for JET in November. The other ones are GEOS and ECC. All of these companies will require a face to face interview as they recruit overseas. Its unlikely they will sponsor your visa without meeting you first.

If you dont come through one of the big schools you come on a 90-day tourist visa and then look for a job once you get here and change your visa once you get here. This avenue demands an element if risk, as no one is going to guarantee you a job and you may go the whole 90 days without finding anything. You may find one after a week of looking.

You can apply through the big schools and they will sponsor your visa, but then you are committed to doing things their way, use their books which to many is rather regimented and "one-size-fits-all".

Have you read the job sites like http://www.ohayosensei.com?

Technical note, when you come with your passport alone, it's called a status of residence and you don't have a visa (Unless you are from a country that requires a visa for tourism). So you have to apply for a NEW visa to work when you come on a tourist status. The catch is that only consulates and embassies can issue visa.

If you have read everything you say, wouldn't you know who the big 4 are and thus know the 4th?

The big 4 are ECC, AEON, NOVA, and GEOS in the eikaiwa industry.
