I am having difficulty finding out if various MA TESOL/Applied Linguisitics Degrees from several universities are "accredited". Does anyone know how I can find out if an on-line degree from a specific Univ. is accredited. Also, does anyone know of a good on-line MA program that isn't over the top expensive and accredited.....thanks all. Currently I teach 27 hours a week plus prep time....how difficult is it to work on a masters and teach full-time? |

Good question: I don't think there is a single list of all accredited institutions. However, I think the university's website would normally state its accrediting bodies. If it doesn't, and its website is not .edu or .ac, I'd be very suspicious. Try typing the uni name in Google and see what you get - I tried that with a uni that someone was asking about a while back and it turned up a "Non-accredited" list from Michigan Dept of Education.
On your second point, a list of online courses has been posted a couple of times: try the search option (top of screen, slightly right of centre).
I'll watch with interest to see if someone else has a better answer. |

Though I have two master's degrees - I too find the maze of accreditation somewhat impenetrable. Perhaps others can give you getter guidance on the issue. Or, at least, I could never get excited by it!
But . . . where Id start is with schools that have some name brand recognition (youve heard of them for example Im thinking of a couple well-known Aussie schools) and have a regular residential program and have added the distance program. Preferably not schools that are only online or only distance education. Generally, quite a difference between the two. |

Hi chola:
Links 2 ~ 14 will help with the question of accreditation, but you might have to dig around a little to find exactly what you're looking for. The remaining links on the list are a mix of Distance TEFL / TESOL and MA TESOL programs which I have collected over the past 6 months or so; from cheap & easy to not so cheap and easy.
As younggeorge pointed out, 'legit' schools & universities will state their accreditation clearly.
If they don't, caveat emptor.
DegreeInfo, which ls650 mentioned - features a forum dedicated to discussion of the topic.
Hope that helps a little.

As a general guideline, I would never study at a university that did not also offer the same courses in a real building and in a university setting. Otherewise, you may be taught by some guy in a basement where they count "life experience" towards your degree. This too is a big red flag. Real unis never consider "life experience" towards a post-graduate degree. Canada, UK and Australian unis are all accreditted and recognized around the world. You have to be more careful about US schools as there is no national American accreditation. If you have a name of a school in mind, post it here and we can have a look at it and someone maybe even went there. |

Hello Gordon:
TEFL in a basement? Sounds like a riot!
But seriously; with regard to US university accreditation, I'd have a look at these 4:
http://ope.ed.gov/accreditation/ (US Department of Education / Accreditation)
http://www.msche.org/ (Middle States Commission on Higher Education / USA)
http://www.ncate.org/ (National Council for Accreditation of Teacher Education)
http://www.chea.org/ (CHEA / Council for Higher Education Accreditation / USA)

It happens: I knew a guy who ran online TEFL courses on the internet connection belonging to the institute where we both worked - without their permission. He got found out and was fired (for that among other things) but I still saw his ads even in reputable newspapers like the TES for a couple of years after that. A TEFL Cert from him would have been like a Ship's Master's Certificate signed by the Captain of the Exxon Valdez! |
