In the smoky basement of a cultural center packed with Argentines young and old, I saw something amazing last night at 2 am. I was there for the salsa and tango lessons earlier in the night and stayed for a few hourse to hang out and practice. As I was getting ready to head out someone mentioned that the world champions of a certain type of tango were to put on a short exhibition in about 10 minutes. Now, I am not a good dancer and up until this point was not in to tango at all. I know it is important here but it just didnt appeal to me all that much. When the couple came out the floor cleared and the lights were set and everyone waited in anticipation. Then they danced. I wont describe it here because it would take too long and wouldnt do it justice, I will just say that it was the most captivating performance of any kind I have ever seen. The tension, the precision, the intensity...I am obviously still thinking about it today, and I am by no means an afficionado. I say this to recommend seeing something of this sort when/if you come. I have a vague idea, from seeing handouts floating around the streets, that some type of championship exhibitions are taking place in the city over the next few months to determine this years best. I recommend experiencing it. It blew my mind. It was so beautiful. If you are coming in the next few weeks or are here already, do check it out.

Do you know any good places to go and listen to live tango music? Not the touristy dinner shows, either.

fiorella-

there are SO MANY places, but i can't think of any names right now Mad if no one else posts any, try going a touristy dinner show, talk to the dancers afterwards and see if they have any recommendations. or just wait till later at night when the tourists have gone to bed. i went to several "hole-in-the-wall" places that were just amazing as far as the music, dancing, and people... (as well as a few others that were little more than a hole in the wall). but seriously, many of the dancers have their tango world and know some incredible places that would be hard to find on your own...

I actually havent heard any live tango yet. Until this performance that i happened to stumble upon, I hadnt really made and effort to get in to tango (hence not being an aficionado). This place where I was never has live music (at least not when Ive been there) but it is a nice place for dancing and meeting people. I think what Amy said is a good option- just talk to people when you get here. If I find out something, I will send word. Im going again this week so Ill ask around...

La Viruta on Calle Armenia in Palermo Viejo. I think the address is calle Armenia 1366. The actual dance club is in the basement of the Armenia Cultural Center. Cost $6 pesos. On Friday nights around 2 am they usually have an exhibition by some experts (this was what I saw that time, except it was even better than usual).
