Hi,
I'm looking for a summer position in Spain from 1-2 months. Any recommendations? Or does anyone know of any schools looking for teachers?
I've got a TEFL and 2 months teaching experience.
Cheers,
Maeve |

Sorry to have to tell you this, but there really is almost no work in Spain (teaching) over summer. Teaching work winds down in July; in August theress nothing at all, and things only start up again towards the end of September. Most teachers here head off to the UK to do summer camps. The summer camps that do exist here only run in June and July and are snapped up by teachers who are already here. There is a little work available on the coasts in bars, not very well paid but pretty good for your Spanish. |

I have been involved in TESOL field in Spain since 1999. Although things do slow down after June, each summer I have seen teachers get work at summer camps here. Teachers already here will often get first choice, however some prefer not to teach in summer camps in Spain and choose to go to other countries to teach for the summer or to work at a summer job in their home countries. A few may actually take vacations someplace! Then there are always those teachers who leave Spain permanently after June. Even after the summer camps have started, I have seen teachers get work replacing others who quit, were fired, broke an arm or what ever. Most camps I know of operate in June and July, but a few do in August, too. Search TESOL Job web sites and local publications, expat as well as Spanish. In the Spanish press and web sites, these camps are often called "colonias." You do not mention if you are in Spain. If you are, ask your colleagues and friends for leads.
Buena suerte!

I defer to CharlesTESOL as hes been here since 1999, but the point I am trying to make is that it is very very difficult to find work here in summer. I think you can definitely forget it during the month of August, and theres a very slow re-start in September, that can drag on into October until you get a full schedule. Most teachers go to the UK to work in summer for a month or two. As I said, I am sure that Charles is right, but personally I havent heard of anyone getting work here in July and August and I have a lot of experienced Spanish-speaking TEFL teaching mates here. By all means give it a shot, but I would advise you to have a good plan B, good luck whatever you choose to do! |

Another thing that would definitely help would be knowing someone who can refer you to summer camps. Again, Maeve, I do not know where you are or where you got certified, but I suggest contacting the job guidance staff there to ask what summer camps in Spain they can refer you to. Job guidance staff should be updating their summer camp database about this time of year. Chao, Charles |

hi here you go...this should help
We are looking for 35-40 TESOL/EFL Teachers during July-August 2005 for summer camps in Spain, The work involves teaching 9-17 year-olds for 3 week periods in July and August. Wages are between 600-750 euros per 3 week period and applicants can register for 1 or 2 camps. Accommodation and full board is provided to all applicants. C
We will also be running an 8 day course in Spain in June 2005, prior to starting work. This may be of interest to you if you have not worked in Spain before so we will provide more information about that further on. People enrolled on the course will be given preference when making final offers.
Qualifications: Candidates should have a TESOL/TEFL Certficate or other recognised teaching qualification. We will consider applicants from all geograhpic areas this year.
We need these documents to comply withSpanish government guidelines for the organization of the camps and they will decide who is elegible to take their applications further. If you have not yet completed your qualification or certficate, we can accept a document in either Spanish or English confirming that you are working towards it or enrolled and that you will have it July 2005.
Contact Info: You maybe suitable for a post at one of our camps this summer and to complete this first phase of the selection we need an updated copy of your CV and a copy of your TEFL/TESL qualification or other recognized teaching certificate. This can be sent to us as a scanned document as long as it occupies no more than 200kb, so we do not need great quality on that, just to be able to recognize your name and what the qualification is. If you cannot do this, please send it by fax to +34 983 308 123 and your CV by e-mail.
Thanks

I'm not necessarily looking for summer 'camps', but are there any other kind of intensive courses available?
The school I'm working at has them, but the rent goes up so much here in the summer time, I'm not sure I want to stick around.

Lozwich, work in language schools in July and August is, as Charles says, rather thin on the ground, and schools operate with a skeleton staff. Still worth sniffing around though.
I always found summer camps a refreshing alternative to the normal routine, and recommend that you try one - but definitely not for the 600 - 750 Euros offered by Tina 78 (Aintcha got no shame, lady???).
If the thought of a classroom full of hyperactive Hispanic brats fills you with dread, however, then perhaps it's not for you!
I can't believe that your rent goes up in summer - what a rip-off! Hope you find something better. |

I was thinking 700 e's for three weeks was ok... Especially when TECS or whatever they're called was only offering 500!
Rent goes up in the summer if you don't have a contract because lots of people come here for short term rentals in the summer holidays. So, my contract expires at the end of June, and if I want to rent for 2 months at almost twice the price, I have to get a new contract.
Just the price of living in a tourist area, I guess.. |

Hi.
English Summer S.A. employs English Teachers fro the summers regularly. It's a Camp America style outfit. The pay isn't brilliant, the accommodation is shared and cramped and the food can be awful, especially if you're vegetarian, but the working hours are reasonable and it's usually pretty friendly. They have five schools throughout Catalonia - the main one is in Tarragona, although that particular one doesn't employ people during the summer, and the others are tiny places out in the sticks, in Tamarit (on the coast, about half an hour's bus ride out of Tarragona), Poblet (just up the hill from l'Espluga de Francoli - probably the best of the bunch, certainly the least isolated), Vallclara (in the mountains in the middle of nowhere and a fifteen km walk to the nearest train station and no bus service whatsoever. Trust me on this one. ) and finally Prades, (the biggest of the four summer schools, but probably even more isolated than Vallclara)
I've worked for them before and although they're not the best, they're not too bad either.
If you're still interested, here's the website:
www.englishsummer.com
(nice and easy to remember at any rate! ) |

To be honest it's usually fairly laid back if you can take the heat. The parents are eager to keep the kids out of mischief - learning a bit of English is a bonus as far as they are concerned. |
