Hi ya all..

This may have been addressed before

Does anyone pay tax on private lessons ?...and has anyone ever got in hotwater for not paying tax.

Also if one wants to do the right thing and pay tax ...how does one go about it ?

About to re apply for my spouse visa and not sure where I stand . ie is there an unofficial amount of lessons that the authorities do not mind one teaching ?

any advice / personal experience would be appreciated.

cheers G

Laughing I have never heard of anyone paying tax on private lessons. I wouldn't even know how to go about reporting such income here. There are immigration counselling services at international associations that should be able to help you.

Teaching private lessons you are essentially your own boss, working for yourself and have no employer paying your wages or taking taxes out. You are paying yourself with privates. Its only worth declaring tax on private lessons if you have a business, you are deducting rent, phone and teaching materials against your business and its a going concern.
On paper you would be making a loss from rent, depreciation, expenses such that your tax liability will be minimal once your accountant has done the numbers.

Otherwise there is no need to declare what you earn from privates. it will make no difference to your tax return anyway if you only have one or two students you teach after work. If you are running a language school with private students and most of your income is from privates then you can set up an arrangement with the tax office to claim your deductions such as phone and rent for the classroom etc as a business expense.
