I am considering teaching overseas but am wondering if there are any positions for someone with my education. I have three University degrees (from a real university not online). I have a Bacholars of Arts major in educational studies, a Bacholars of Education, and a Certificate in Applied Technology (as well as a teaching licence).

I am thinking of teaching overseas before I settle down...

Is there anything out there for a person like me, or should I stick to teaching in Canada.

With your papers you could easily find a TEFL position in many countries. The question you should ask yourself is - what is your long term goal? Do you want to just go abroad for a couple of years as a bit of a travel lark? Or do you have a desire to delve deeply into TEFL overseas?

For now my plans are for a couple years to build up some international experience and travel....

If I really enjoy it then I would consider doing it long-term.

Yes, there'd be plenty of jobs for you. But you really ought to spell Bachelor's correctly in your applications. The Cert in Applied Technology could help you as well. Look through the job ads on Dave's and on TEFL.com

Good luck

Where do you want to teach? Overseas is a big place. You have the qualifications for any entry level teaching position.
Do you have any teaching experience to go with your education?

I have over 700 hours of teaching experience along with my education. However it is teaching experience in a regualr classroom (not ESL/EFL)

What type of salary should I be looking for? I do have more education than most and was hoping my salary would reflect that.

Salaries vary widely from country to country, or even city to city.

Yes, you have two bachelors, but to get beyond an entry-level position you'll usually need a masters/PhD _and_ a substantial amount of experience (far more than 700 hours).

With your education and experience, you should be able to avoid the bottom rung, but I wouldn't expect much higher than that until you get a couple of years of teaching TEFL under your belt.

Still, you should be able to find a position that pays enough to rent an apartment, do a little travel in your holidays, and live in modest comfort.

700 hours is very little. With a couple of yeafrs under your belt, you can work in an int'l school and do quite wel.. That may be your best option, if you do want to teach as a career.

From what I have read and heard some people teach right out of highschool with not post-secondary education and no experience. So I am surprised that I would have a problem.

I'm sure a few people do, but they don't last long and in many countries, you can't get a visa without a degree. Therefore, you are more or less in the same boat as everyone else.

Mishuah

this conversation is going around in circles

Most countries require a university degree in order to get a work visa. Having 3 degrees will not get any more than one visa from immigration. They dont care how many degrees you have and one is all you need for your visa.

You are qualified to find work in many countries. The question is you deciding where you would like to work most and apply for a visa.

Most ESL jobs dont require previous teaching or classroom experience and your classroom experience teaching other subjects will not lend itself easily to teaching ESL in foreign countries as ESl has its own teaching methodology. Most people who get into teaching here are not trained or qualified teachers but simply have a BA degree and a native speakers of English. Most of your students will probably not even speak English so you need to draw on a different set of skills than a classroom back home.

Whether you have one degree or six bachelors degrees you will qualifiy for most entry level teaching jobs in a conversation school somewhere. You want to teach at a high school? You will need in-country experience connections as well as your degree and a valid work visa. Teach at a university and you need a minimum Masters degree though ts possible to get uni jobs in Korea and China with bachelors degrees. Do you have one of those? having three bachelors degrees will not help you get a higher paying university job in these parts.

So where do you want to work in the world so we can narrow your options down for you? What country or region rocks your boat?

Salaries are a reflection of what jobs you can get in the country you want to work in, not what you think you deserve. JET teachers in Japan fresh out of university make about 3.6 million yen a year or about US$35,000 a year. That is just off the boat newbies with a fresh BA.

High school ALT teachers with experience make about 350-400,000 yen a month. University teachers make significantly more. Don't flatter yourself that with 3 undergrad degrees (not even in TESOL) you are entitled to a living and a paycheck. Many graduates can not even find jobs here after 2-3 months of looking for jobs and go home empty handed.

Most employers overseas look for experience teaching students ESL in their own country, not back in Canada, so your 700 hours will carry little weight here.

Wow you people are very discouraging.

I was looking in areas of europe, central america, poland, and russia.

Perhaps I should continue supply teaching here in Canada and wait for a replacement contract.

By the way the B.Ed is not an undergraduate degree.

The Jet salary you quoted sounded really good.... anything around that amount would work for me.
