'If'?

I believe this was Telly 'Kojak' Savalas' only hit single. Correct me if I'm wrong.

It was ingelbert Humperdink(sp) did you you know that 'if' is the shortest name for a song that was number one in the uk. Honestly, I didn't google that, it is just the trivial information I carry about in my head. If you are ever in a pub quiz you want me in your team.

31 has made some astute observations; his experiences, mind you - not mine. But in your list of observations, there is one thing you have forgotten.

What about the Turkish obsession with nice shoes? Of the years I spent there, and having just been there recently, oversized, clunky running shoes are rare. Check out their feet - all have leather shoes, as nice as the wearer can afford.

I remember staring down at my Con's in shame. Being a North American female with big feet, finding nice shoes in Turkey that fit a size 10 (Yank) foot for women was impossible. (Uma Thurman and Julia Roberts both have size 10 feet, too...I'm in good company).

Just a note: I love the gripes and observations in this group. I also love that whynotme refuses to let 31 have the last word. Also - re: the original thread, I had my wallet pickpocketed at Yenikapa but it was my fault. I was hardly inconspicuous. My enormous feet must have given my yabanci status away.

Unlike others 31 has been here for a while. I don't know if he's still here now or not. He knows what he's talking about, but he's only giving half of the story. If I was to wright a list of all that is wrong with melbourne it only tell half the story.

So how about 31 we all know the problems of the city,
what do you like Exclamation about the place and while we!re at it your job.

Btw if as you claim you did work at E.T then from what you have said befor I think you did some time at Goztepe. If you did, I either meet you or ran into you. Am I right.

There are lots of good things about Turkey, and I think we all know what most of them are. Maybe listing them just isn't as funny, and doesn't really make for good reading. A good novel isn't about good people with happy lives doing nice things for each other-- it's about people with faults and psychoses muddling through everyday life as best as they can, and the writer tries to make us see something through the eyes of the 'other'. Here, we're all 'others', even, to an extent, our Turkish friends who contribute, because their language abilities and working situations gave them another set of eyes.

Also, a lot of the goodness here is intangible. Trying to name it might spoil it. But whatever it is that's so good, it's enough to keep us here despite all the dangers and petty annoyances.

If I make a negative comment about Turkey, I'm not, with that comment, implying that my country is superior. America may have better wiring and wheelchair ramps and workplace safety standards, but there are a lot of other really bad things there-- cultural, social, and political-- that these good things don't make up for. In fact, it's being here that's made me notice even more acutely what's wrong at home...

Embarassed Who looks the more foolish. Me for being wrong about 'if' or preston for admitting he owns it.

Not if they grew up watching superstars. After Brian Jacks who was next to dominate? Was it Geoff Capes?

Geoff Capes, actually won MR. Universe once. He was on 'Shooting Stars' a while back and Will Self asked him

'How come Mr Universe is always won by someone from earth ?

Laugh ? I nearly graduated.......
