How easy/difficult is it to find accomodation in Thailand? I'm looking at two different jobs, in Trang and Ayutthaya (v. different, I know), and both contracts provide housing allowances, but no actual housing.

Should I be apprehensive about teaching contracts that don't provide housing?

And while we're discussing contracts, any insights on the term "we will assist with your visa/accomodation/work permit/insurance"? How much weight does "assist" really have?

Any advice is much appreciated!

Hello annie733:

Welcome to Dave's!

Q: "Should I be apprehensive about teaching contracts that don't provide housing?"

A: No. There's no need to be apprehensive!

The "free" housing provided by schools often s.u.c.k.s. so I'd much rather have the allowance

and find something on my own - than to be stuck in a shared smelly apartment

with the elephant man for an entire year. Twisted Evil

Q: "How easy/difficult is it to find accomodation in Thailand?"

A: It's usually pretty easy! And someone from the Thai teaching staff will surely help you with that.

Q: "How much weight does "assist" really have?"

A: Hard to say. You'll have to get them to clarify that, or just 'think positive' and take the plunge.

Good luck!

Hi there,

Housing in Ayyuthaya is easier to find than mosquito bites and can be had from 2500 b a month. I would concur with the point raised earlier re:
the quality of inlcusive accomodation, often NOT good. A. has lovely riverside aparments which used to go for 3500 a month a couple of years back. Out in the sticks you can pick up a house for a couple of thou no problem. Dont know much about Trang though.

Good luck

W

finding accomodation is simply a matter of walking round areas and asking people. if you havent found a place within 2 days i would be very very surprised. finding a nice place may take a day longer. And odds are the place you find yoursel will be nicer than one they ind or you and more private. it could be the sister of the head teacher who owns it and will report back every cough and laugh you make.

the amount of assistance depends entire on the school and could range from fill this in, sign there, come with us etc to "you want what?"
