Hello,

I am wondering what other's experiences are regarding who (which school/institute, etc.) pays the most (generally) in Latin America? I am currently working on my CELTA. Additionally, I have a BA in English and have been a Tech Writer/Trainer for the past 9 years In Washington D.C.

I have read on other parts of this site that if one expects a higher salary then he or she should stick to International Language Schools/Institutes. Is this true?

Thanks in advance for your responses. What a wealth of intial knowledge I have already obtained from reading through what you wonderful people have written!

Don't take this personally, but if this is going to be your first exposure to Latin America and you have prioritized salary, you should stay home.

But just to show that I don't bear grudges when people are boorish, please be advised that your question is not clear. If you want replies that are more productive--by your standards, of course (already you are doing the Gringo Dance of imposing YOUR way on Latin America, and you are not even here yet!)--try writing a question that makes some sense.

International language schools--would we be talking Berlitz?

Or are you talking about international schools (for example, of the K-12 variety)?

I repeat my previous advice. When you don't know what you're doing, it's better to do it at home. Usually cheaper, too--since that's an issue for you.

In general (and I emphasize "in general") private schools (like prepatorias/high schools) pay better than most of the language schools (like Harmon Hall). With a CELTA and a BA, your options for high-paying jobs are rather limited. A masters helps a lot here. I know two people living here and married to Mexican men who are working on their masters for this very reason.

Another route to consider is to look at working at cooporations. I know two people who do this and they say the pay is good, you just have to get the work. That takes time to get going.

With a CELTA and a bit of legwork/patience, you should be able to find work that allows you to make enough money to live on. More than that, who knows?

DZNZ: Comments about "Smarta$$ and juvenille replies" to the one poster who has more high-level experience of teaching English in Latin America than any other active poster on the board and who quite possibly knows more about the subject than the rest of the posters put together are not overly sensible if you are after being informed.

But hell! Just carry right on and the real smartasses will come steaming through. And we know how to spell "juvenile"
