I recently got a decent digital camera (cost around $400) and an Ipod.

Am I asking to get relieved of my stuff if I take pictures all the time?Or if i listen to the ipod?

I just read a thread about the street crime in the Chilean forums, and wondering if it is as prevelant in BA.

well, yes and no. it is rather prevalent and there are some VERY skilled thieves on the streets all over the city. HOWEVER, if you're walking around in daylight and physically holding onto your stuff (ESPECIALLY if you're on a colectivo), then you will probably be fine... as always, just be aware of what is going on around you. and if someone squirts you with mayonaise (or any other condiment, for that matter), walk away and don't let them clean you off!

I've been walking around happily and without incident for over a year with my ipod, white headphones and all. I also take my camera with me when i go out and haven't had any issues. I very rarely take my ipod out of my pocket in the street, usually just putting it on shuffle and taking whatever comes. I don't go out with it after dark. At the moment you see quite a few argentines blatantly flaunting their ipods, like in the US and UK a year or so ago b4 thieves started targeting anyone with white headphones...that'll probably catch on here in a year or so...

During the day you've got to be pretty unlucky to be the victim of street crime but it does happen. The post about crime you read on the chile forum is not representative of what life is actually like in Santiago btw.
