I'll be returning to the Tokyo area in the fall. What is your daily commute like? I'm wondering how much time on the train I can endure. I guess I will invest in an Ipod and mail myself some paperbacks... |

My commute is 5 minutes by bicycle....but then again, I live and work on the outskirts of Tokyo !
I think the average commute for some of my friends is anywhere from 30 minutes to 1 hour. |

In Kansai and my commute is almost 2 hours. Just willing to give up a house a cheap and large house, with garden and a great balcony. Not at least until I decide I can bear my current school for more than a year. |

If I took public transportation, I'd have to ride 2 buses (15 and 20 minutes), or 1 bus (15 minutes), a subway 5 minutes, then a bus for 20 minutes.
Most of the time, I drive. It takes only 20 minutes. |

I live in the center of Tokyo. It takes me 45 minutes by train (1 transfer), but only 18 minutes by bicycle. Needless to say, I ride my bike unless the weather is extremely bad. |

I haven't signed my next contract yet, but I'm trying to decide if I should go with the job I think will enjoy more, but a further commute (up to an hour) or the job I'm not sure I'll like as much with a shorter commute (20 minutes). I'm leaning toward the longer commute, but I've never had to do that before! |

35 minutes by scooter (or 1hr 20 by bus and train), or 45 mins by bicycle. Either way I get more than 1000 yen trans allowance per day. |

It's about 20-25 minutes from door to door if I take the express train. I can't ride my bike--it's too far. Before I changed jobs, my commute was a 15 minute bike ride or a 25 minute trek on the subway or JR line, both of which involved a transfer. I think riding my bike to work had many benefits and was simply good for my health. I notice my stamina is slowly getting weaker since I became a train-only commuter. |

5 minutes to the station, 35 minutes by train, either a 10 minute bike ride or 20 minute walk to get to the school. |

2 hours each way to my main job, 30 minutes to a side-job.
My choice, though. I can't stand living near Tokyo. |

I do not think long commutes are bad as long as you don`t have to get up early(or put in overtime)
I work every day except Sunday, and work weeks can be a real grind.
I have worked in Shibuya and I didn`t mind an hour commute, but the work was irregular.
My commute is ten minutes on the train.
So for me it`s great, but for my wife it isn`t. When married it is hard to decide where to live since both of us have jobs with different locations.
At first she thought living in Kanagawa would be OK because she was concerned with saving money on rent, but now she wishes we lived in Tokyo. She thinks 25 minutes is too long a commute.
I wish we lived in Kawasaki, but the closer you are to Shinjuku, the higher the rents are.
My wife, compared to me, has to spend about 40 minutes to Shinjuku, and about 50 or so when she goes to Shibuya. She hates the commute because mostly she has to stand and the trains can be very crowded.
With her schedule I don`t think she can ride in one of the women`s only cars.
Sometimes she takes Den-entoshi instead of Odakyu, because it is less crowded, even though Odakyu tends to have more express trains.
My wife also works at a uni and used to take a train plus a bus. That sucked. So we have a car and she prefers driving.
She used to spend half an hour on the bus (longer with rush hour traffic) and about 15 minutes on the train.
A typical commute on a train to Tokyo is 68 minutes. In Osaka it is definitely less.
In Osaka she would take local trains from Tennoji since she would get a seat, and wouldn`t have to transfer. |
