I wanted to know if I would be hired in UAE. I plan to do one contract in Russia for experience, then transfer to UAE.

BACKGROUND: Australian, 30yrs, no uni qualifications but 12 experience in F&TV production (SPFX, directing, TV ads, graphic, photog, internet). Would my F&TV experience equate to a BA or MA in their eyes or should I not waste my time. I speak Fluent Greek and some German too and have a TESOL certificate with tourist and business English specialisations.

Are colleges in UAE looking for conversational English or do they also expect grammar/writing teaching skills too?

Has anyone experienced a smooth IH transition from one country to another?

Failing this what are my options? If I go for a multimedia/photo or graphic teaching job would they require a BA given my experience. What if I try to get employment outright in the F&TV industry? Can anyone suggest a place I could pitch my F&TV experience to? From the Reputable Internet job sites thread I read that www.jobsindubai.com is a scam. Any comments on this?

My motivation is travel/culture/money and to add to my list of experience.

Thank-you very much for your valuable insight and time.

F&TV,

No one here is going to be able to tell you much of anything about jobs in your field (or relating to your questions on the other thread) or about reputable websites to find non-EFL related jobs. We are all English teachers here and in the ME - outside of Saudi Arabia - none of the decent employers use recruiters. We go directly to the employers for work.

As to the possibilities of your teaching English in the Gulf, your chances of very slim, and any that might hire you would be employers best avoided. The jobs that pay a living wage insist on a related degree - preferably an MA in Applied Linguistics or TEFL - and a few years of related English teaching experience. There are very few jobs teaching conversation. Almost all jobs are teaching academic English - in particular reading and writing.

Not even having a BA, your TEFL certificate would be pretty useless, I'm afraid. Some of the Asian countries hire with these credentials, but not the Middle East.

I put my (limited) contribution in the "reputable Internet site" thread. But the key point is this link:-

Recently there seems to be quite a few non teachers asking about non teaching jobs on various forums. I think Dave should set a grammar test or something.

Laughing Laughing or spelling? But, then many of the teachers on here might not pass...

I guess the real reason is that there is really nothing else like this on the net. The closest would be Lonely Planet, but that is for travel. With the number of IT jobs around the world - plus the fact that they are theoretically computer savvy - it is strange that there isn't a big site like this for worldwide IT jobs.

I read/heard somewhere that EFL is the biggest tertiary industry in the world, bigger than tourism. Has anyone else heard this or is it complete b*llocks

It makes sense DMB, because our field would even feed off the travel industry because English is the lingua franca of travel too.
