Also contributing to the dynasty trends in basketball is the star-system that the NBA thrives on. Basically, you sign or draft a Garnett, Shaquille, or LeBron, then try to surround him with the right pieces. Usually, when he is in that 7 or 8 year prime, if you have the right pieces around him (usually including another all-star), you can make a run at a title every year. It is the case with every one of those team except the pistons. Everyone of them had at least one player is one of the top five players in the world in their prime. The superstar system is much more justifiable in basketball because only five guys play at a time and usually only 7 or 8 see much action in the course of a game. Of course, the soft cap means you can sign Amare Stoudamire for 20 million a season and hope he develops into the one player who carries you. As a side note, I love it when teams like the Knicks make that one player a shoot-first point guard like Stephon Marbury and then proceed to languish in mediocrity for the next five years while Marbury hoists twenty-five shots a game and cashes his fat checks.

By the way, the spurs game was on in average bars last night. As Guille said, watching the Finals here will be no problem. And how about Manu last night. Ohh, Manu. And while Manu gets the girl (that is, all the press) Tim Duncan once again turns in the quietest 24 and 17 ever while battling the Wallace Brothers (who have made even the Diesel look human 2 years running)

Why the knock on Marbury? I mean he's overpaid, but I think the Knicks problem is Allan Houston's and Penny Hardaway's contracts more than Marbury (who gets plenty of dimes, incidentally, for a so-called shoot first player - I admit he's not "the answer", but hes a good guy to have on your team). Their other problem is that they have no legit big man... they should have held onto Marcus Camby who is tearing it up in Denver.

But yes, thats true, of course. The five man lineup makes the NBA more prone for dynasties. Magic, Isiah, Jordan, Hakeem, Duncan & Robinson, Shaq and Kobe, and then Larry Brown and the rest of the Pistons (hard to pick one player from that lineup) stayed around and led to the repeats/threepeats/multiple championships.

The Suns SHOULD sign Stoudamire to a long term deal for crazy money. They would be crazy not to... this kid is only 22 years old and averaged 30 pts on 53% fgp, 79% ftp, 10 boards, 2 blocks... in his first trip to the playoffs. sickening.

Since this is for all intensive purposes the definitive sports thread of the Argentine forum, I just wanted to mention that Arturo Gatti is fighting Floyd Mayweather later on this month in the strongest division in the sport. Can one watch championship prize fights in Argentina for free? That is one thing I really miss about Brazil.

Regards,
VA

Carlos...you seem to be in the know about the fights here. PM Carlos if you can.

I for one have no idea and havent seen any fights on tvs in bars, though I havent been looking.

Looks like Tyson is done. I still say that Tyson-Holyfield I was the best heavyweight fight that I have ever seen live. Holyfield was a 20-1 underdog and came back to win by TKO in the 11th round. As you Brits would say... it was brilliant!

Looks like Tyson's still going at it...McBride had this to say about the fight:

"Tyson is crazy. He bit my nipple," McBride told the paper. "I didn't realize it at first but he had his teeth around it. I just felt a strange sensation and then realized what he'd done. He could not get up high enough to bite my ears good job he wasn't a midget, otherwise he would have bitten something else."

http://msn.foxsports.com/boxing/story/3694450

This was his third loss in his last four fights, so it seems his prediction of "fading into Bolivian" is ever more likely now

Anyway...quick question about watching America sports in BA. Is it possible to catch any games of futbol americano, or is the only option packing into Hard Rock Cafe for the superbowl? It'd be a shame if I couldn't watch my beloved Ravens clean up the AFC

I have a hard time believing anyone would want to watch the ravens. Who is going to be the quarterback this year?

Well...I might have to cool off for a minute before I respond to that. Maybe if you mean to say, you have a hard time believing anyone who doesn't ordinarily watch american football would want to watch them, I'd be more inclined to agree. Otherwise: The Ravens are the 2nd youngest team in the NFL, but have had, arguably the greatest defensive dynasty in the NFL since they won the superbowl in '01. Annual probowler/defensive player of the year/best looking/best player in the NFL Ray Lewis, last year's defensive player of the year Ed Reed, 2003 all-rookie team defensive end Terrell Suggs, and many more have all contributed to this. In fact, last year 5 Ravens players made the Pro-Bowl, with all but one coming from the Defense.
All of that aside...I'd agree our QB Boller - who is only 24 and about to start only his second full season - is mediocre (right now), we now have Derrick Mason at WR, who had the 2nd most receptions in the entire NFL last season, in addition to the best TE in the league and perennial Pro Bowler Todd Heap AND NFL single-game rushing record holder Jamal Lewis, whose fresh out of prison and ready to break new records (and not in how many times he can drop the soap in one night).

How dare you! He was great at Cal (my alma matter) despite a poor team around him, and is only getting better. Look for him to have a good season.

Ray Lewis is without a doubt the best defensive player in the game... I mean, he murders people (no pun intended)!

do you expect us to comment on the "best looking" claim? WTF?

Tampa had a pretty sick d when they busted up my Raiders a few years back, but I would have to agree that the Ravens '01 might have been the best defense ever. I mean who wins a superbowl purely defense? asqueroso...

Haha, watch out for Ray-Ray indeed. If he doesn't kill you with his tackles, then his dance moves will do the trick. I'd like to see him go up against the Diesel in a dance off....

It's a damn shame what happened to Cal this year...I mean, the Holiday Bowl, c'mon now! One of my good friends goes to Cal and I was looking forward to playing you guys in the Rose Bowl, but instead we wound up losing to UT in a heartbreaker (I went to Mich). Better than last year though!

Well-played. Nice response to my backhanding of the Ravens. They have a lot going for them and are a perennially good team (very tough in todays NFL when a team doesnt make the playoffs one year and makes it to the superbowl the next) even if they are boring and horribly inefficient on offense. Boller may turn out to be good, but right now he is less than mediocre- he is atrocious. With that running game and defense, if he could just throw for 150 a game and not turn it over we would be talking about the Ravens and not the Patriots as a dynasty. Ray can dance but what that move TO pulled last year? Totally embarrassed Ray, I thought. I expected Lewis to explode TOs head on the next series but the eagles handed it to them. Cal was ripped off this year, big time college football suck sometimes. (I give you a hard time about the Ravens but I pull for the Dolphins who couldnt beat the Ravens practice squad right now, so have some pity)

Yeah, WTF on Ray Lewis being the best-looking? If I was going to go out on a limb and proclaim someone as the best-looking in the NFL, Lewis wouldnt be in my mind.

Does anyone remember when Ray Lewis was being interviewed by some show and he takes the camera crew in to his living room- sized closet and says "Deez is my minks" pointing to his mink fur coats. I rank this quote up there with Tysons "Bolivian" quote for all-time unintentional comedy.

Every once in a while, someone does something so brilliant that it is burned in to the collective memory of mankind for time immemorial. This is Robert Horry last night. I mean, the three pointers are almost pass at this point. You expect them from Big Shot as they go through the rim without even moving the net. But the dunk? WTF! Where did that come from? I kept waiting for him to pass or shoot a pull-up. No one takes it in to the paint that hard when it is patrolled by the Wallace Boys. It blew my mind. I nearly jumped up and ran through the apartment like a scalded dog. When he made the game winner, the bigger surprise was that he wasnt triple teamed. As a side note, I was watching the game in an apartment with an argentine family. I am friends with the guy and his mother and sister were watching too. It was the first game that had ever sat down and really watched. At the end of the game, they were so nervous they had their heads buried in their hands because they were so in to it. They are now fans. My work here is done.

Big shot Rob can only come through and make the difference in one game... then its up to Duncan. So far, he has his head up his a** and is getting manhandled by the Wallace boys. Duncan just isn't a big time player in the clutch. Although he has one more game to prove me and all his other critics wrong.

I'm not homophobic and if it comes up in a normal discussion I admit when I think a man is attractive. But for it to come up in a sports thread? I think so and so is the greatest... and hes cute too. Shocked That's pretty gay. I will say this... if I could come back in my next life with another man's body, I would definitely consider his near the top of the list... with LBJ a close second.
