Hi,
Since there isn't a forum for Hungary, I thought I'd post a message here.
Has anyone worked in Hungary namely Budapest recently after getting their CELTA? Just wondering how hard it was to find a job after the CELTA program and how much one can make? I am an American, will that be a problem in finding work?
Does anyone know about the CELTA International House program in Budapest?
Do tell please!
Thanks,
Khalid |

Where are all the Hungary teachers?
I don't know first hand but I've worked with people who taught in Hungary, so I can have a stab at giving a bit of advice.
The IH CELTA should be good. IH is a good place to do it as it looks good on a CV, but the CELTA should be ok anywhere that you choose to do it -providers are regularly checked by UCLES (the accrediting body). Also, I would expect IH Budapest to have a lot of info. and help to give course participants about getting jobs in Hungary, or the broader Eastern Europe afterwards.
I can't say anything about jobs in Budapest, sorry. I know everyone seems to love the city and my friends who taught in Hungary before I met them, then went back afterwards - they were smitten with the place, but they were in a provincial town.
If you are dead set on teaching in Budapest after the CELTA rather than being flexible about Eastern Europe as a whole (EU and non EU) then I should contact IH Budapest in advance and ask about your job chances as an American. I think they'd give a reasonably honest and informed reply.
All the best. |

I was about to make this post myself. I have been set on getting my certification and teaching (hopefully) in Budapest.
I'm moving with my girlfriend, so naturally we'd both be looking for jobs. Thanks for the advice on contacting the program.
My other question would be a direction as to which school we should look to. I've read up on IH and Via Lingua, and I have been more tempted with going to Via Lingua. Is it an OK school, or would my money be better spent with the International House?
edit: We were also planning on going in early November. Is this a bad time of the year to go? Would we be better off getting there for the beginning of the 2nd semester, summer, etc?
another thing: Since I'm so new to this process, I'm really kind of wondering what else I should be doing to prepare and what else I should know going into this. I'm guessing it's not as easy as signing up, packing up, and showing up, but I'm really stuck as to what other actions I can take at this point.
Thanks |
